No Frills 250 Quad - Finished

I';ve been building this for the last few weeks. The final bits turned up on Friday so I got it finished over the weekend.

This is just a fun/acro-practice quad to replace the 350QX I sold a few weeks back. Not at all polished, just slapped together with a KK2.1.5 board I had with 1.18S1Pro loaded. Cheapo FPV250 frame, Afro 12A ESC';s, Multistar Elite 2204 2300kV motors, Orange 6ch receiver, 5x3 tri blades and a messy wiring job. But it works and flies really well  ::)

The battery is a bit on the big side, but these Overlander 2200 30c 3s only weigh 166g, so with it not having any FPV bits to carry about the weight is only 510g all up.

Just needs some lights to finish it off

I still remember the challenge of fitting stuff on an FPV250 frame  Stepping up to a H frame is such as luxury

Yeah there isn';t much space for... anything

I';m thinking about swapping the KK for an APM-mini FC with GPS. Now that will be a squeeze!

I find the long frame upgrade useful. It give a bit of extra room though it';s not the sexiest thing.

I wasn';t aware of that upgrade until a couple of days ago. Might be something to get if I decide to get FPV on this, but more likely I';ll just upgrade the whole frame with a nice CF one  ::)

looks cool man!

what settings are you using on your kk board out of interest? (pids etc)

+1 for the long frame, or low hung which is vibration dampened.

I had a couple of flights on my FPV250 and then bolted the long frame on.

After a quick fiddle with the gains I ended up back at stock settings, it seems pretty bang on. Not had chance to test at speed or in wind yet, but it can';t be far off.

EDIT: Sorry my mistake I upped them to 75 P and 55 I. It was the SL settings that I left stock.

Just done a quick load test. 28A full throttle chat, but only 7A at hover, so with this battery that';s 15mins flight time with 80% discharge

Are you running the stock software on the KK2.1 board?   If so I would suggest updating it to Steveis 1.18S or newer.  The Steveis software is worlds apart from stock, amazingly stable and locked in.

All you could want to know about Steveis firmware, getting it, installing it and using it are here --> http://www.rcgroups.com/forums/showthread.php?t=2061620

As mentioned in the OP I';m using 1.18S1Pro. As you say the firmware has come on lots, even just this year. SL Works well with 1.18S1Pro. Cheers though

I';ve just been out for my first outdoor go with this, on my lunch break  ::) love it!

I flew for 14 mins with a couple of quick stops for PID tweaks and the battery was at ~3.75v/cell after. Not just hovering either. A good cruise around as decent speed. Plus it climbs at a hell of a rate!

PID';s upped again to 85P 60I. SL at 80P. Still takes a little too long to level but any more than 80P and it wobbles a bit much on decent.

Overall really chuffed

nice little quad you put together there!...  I just ordered parts to put a little 250 together myself. Dont know about you but I was kinda inspired by that really cool quad racing vid that done the rounds a month or two ago.

Its neat to have a small cheaper quad to be a bit more crazy with that doesn';t make you cringe as much if you hit the deck!

Oh that one looks awesome, I need to find somewhere in uk to do this!

I actually seen this one:

Some of the flyby shots under the little obstacle thing are fantastic!

Another great vid, cheers  not seen that one.

Just built myself a no frills 250, only the bare necessities, all up weight including battery is 360grams. Flipped the frame so the battery is underneath, seems to help the kk board be a bit more stable.

Nice and tidy  how';d you get it so light?! That frame must weight nothing. What battery are you running?

Chami82923

It';s a printed frame with minimal infill, the battery is a 1300mah zippy compact, saved weight by using nylon bolts everywhere except the motors, no pdb, also using aluminium locknuts on the props, the motors are turnigy multistar 1704';s 1900kv, which are tiny, I wanted something light that I could throw around without worrying. Seems to work, need some more tuning of the PID';s but it';s working, once I get some time and still air I';ll be flying.
