What’s the best Hex to build?

Hi all,

I used to fly a F550 which is stupidly sold a year or so ago, it looks like DJI have now discontinued the flame wheels as they don’t seem to be in stock anywhere anymore. What is the best Hex to build these days? Or are there any good F550 clones worth buying?

Best Hex in that size frame is S550, its a lovely Hex
Volantex Ranger 1600/2000, Ranger 1200 G2, Phoenix S 1600 AR900 Miniskyhunter, ZOHD Dart 635 and a few 680 batwings plus old faithful C1 chaser and a lot of eagletree guardians

The best? That's a very subjective question.

I built a 450 hex that I hardly ever flew because it was such a faff to take anywhere. It wouldn't fit in the cars boot and I didn't like having it rolling about in the back seat in case it got broken on route, So personally I felt the best frame would have to be strong, offer folding arms for ease of transport, Good spares availability, And preferably it wouldn't have a 3 figure price tag.

At the time I was looking the only one that fit the bill was the "Tarot FY680". I was all up for getting one before Hobbyking had a sale and offered their X900 folding tricopter frame for half price. I decided that I could definitely do something with that.

I've cut the arms down by about a third and added 2 motor mounts per arm (And omitted the tilt mechanism) to make it into a folding Y6. I still have a few things left to do before I maiden this one so I haven't flown it yet........... Well, That's if I don't count the time that while testing aspects of it were working it went nuts and shot full throttle into the ceiling (Don't test with props on guy's. ::)). When finished it's going to fold up into a shorter package than most comparable sized hex's will and have less chance of props in the shot because the front arms are spaced at 120 degrees apart rather than 60.

So, In my opinion, The best hex is....... a Y6.

I need a pay rise........ Though I'd settle for a reduction in the amount of hours I need to work to get the same money.
