Is there a way that the u-blox should be fitted? Does it matter which way up or around?

The way you have it there, the patch antenna upwards. It doesn';t matter which direction it';s fitted in as the GPS software works that out when you start moving.

It';s a stronger signal if it';s upside down the pcb partially shields it.
