Cheers Oakie, appreciate your comments   I';m not sure the mdf will fly, it';s mainly for checking that things fit, as it';s the hardest thing to judge all that stuff whilst it';s in a computer program, even despite seeing it in 3D, still looks completely different to how you';d imagine when you see it in wood, if you get my drift?

Just a quick update, I now know why it looked bigger than I imagined, due to processes somewhere between computer and human, it was cut about 10% larger on all measurements!
Oh well, at least it was only scrap mdf, not carbon.

My deadcat 250 is now looking suitably waspish in black/yellow perspex

For those of you unfamiliar with the laser cutting process, here';s a short clip.

The more ancient of you (and I include myself in that number) may recall this music being used for the ';Potter';s wheel'; interlude shown in the early days of BBC tv (presumable whilst they stroked their collective varsity beards and pondered what to do next).

Wasp laser cut from Andy on Vimeo.</p>

And here';s a real wasp...

Hard to tell apart eh?

A little more progress on the Wasp!.  Doug (Dougal1957) very kindly 3D printed me a case for the CC3D, and I only had to make very minor adjustments to the main Rx cable port aperture, and open up the mount holes & led display hole.  Everything else is a great fit, so I';d like to say a very big thanks to Doug  for his kind and very swift assistance.

I';m still waiting for the standoffs which are coming from China, and will need a few more fittings to complete the frame, but all in all we';re nearly there with it.
The motors are superb, and have APC 6x4 props, but of course would look better in carbon.  For testing purposes, the APC';s will do fine, as they are tough but cheap from BG.

Doesn';t look like it';ll be finished before I go on holiday in a week or so, so the maiden is still a while away, oh well, no hurry really.   ~~

Hi Andy,
Looking good. Any mods required to the design so far. I have bought a couple of A3 sheets of 1.6mm g10. So if you want me to cut you a frame out of the stuff I will gladly. No point in cutting it until you';re sure the prototype is ok. I';ve also cut a set of arms out of 4mm tufnol whale, they look pretty good.
The yellow g10 and the brown tufnol is in keeping with your design I think.

Richard

flybywire

Hi Rich, a couple of mods, but only minor really.  Motor holes need to be slotted for both pairs, so motor wires exit paralell to arms, and cc3d cable exit holes maybe need a tad of adjustment.
I';ll mail you the mods in a week or two when i have all the bits from China.
Apart from that, it';s all systems go!
Cheers

How';s progress Andy?

Paul

Glad u asked Paul!   ::)

Well, just back off me hols, so have another week of no work luxury to get it in the air!  Ironically it';s the small stuff that';s held me back, like spacers & standoffs from China, that arrive without nuts & bolts etc. Agh!!

I';m off to fly my rebuilt 500 heli tomorrow morning, plus a couple of mid range fpv flights weather permitting, but will order up the last bits to finish her off for end of the week.

If all goes well, I';ll get Richard to modify the dxf file with the final mods (as he';s a dab hand with the cad!) plus he';s cutting the first g10 plates.

I can';t wait to fly it, it certainly looks like it';s a go-er.  :crossfingers:  :hmm:

';Bee'; indeed!  Doh!

Yeah, if the design works, I';m sure we could bash out a few, it';d be kinda cool to see a swarm of wasps out there, no wait what';s the collective noun for wasps?

I already owe one to Doug for printing my cc3d cases!

... what';s the collective noun for wasps?

Ask and ye shall receive ::)

Quote
Collective nouns for wasps include: a colony of wasps (the members of the collection). a nest of wasps (like colony, but particularly when found in the nest). a swarm of wasps (usually in flight together, perhaps attacking someone). Other examples include the following, but they lack citations and are almost certainly malicious coinages that should be avoided. They propagate through media such as the Internet and clutter the language without adding value. a bike of wasps a pail of wasps a pladge of wasps

Now enough of this shilly shallying ... get on with it.

Rugby team? a collection of wasps? ok I shut up.....Andy not expecting gratis by the way, If it';s a goer I was going to ask if you would make one for a prize? as it is quite exclusive at this point. Lol, ';pladge';, now that sounds more like Yorkshire slang for a part of the bod, i.e "and he w';er stung lustily on ';is pladge, tha'; fair made ';im gip".

A raffle, yes i like that idea.

Talking of gip & pladge, i can';t get hold of apc 6x4 cw props (thin electric) anywhere (cheaply that is). Anybody know a quick source?  Even BG are out.

Lol again!  My parcel from BG was waiting for me on my arival back from the field.

You have to laugh, 4 APC lookalikes to complement the 4 they sent on first part order, but all CW!  I need CCW,!

Oh well, such is life, at least i have a selection on the way locally.
I had forgotten my out of stock order of emax';s!

Just had a blinding flight today, heli & quad in the air at same time!   Footage laters hopefully.

Ay-up it flies!!

Well, yes I must admit to being a tad surprised, but of course it';s the result I had preyed for!  It';s been a fiddly process at times, designing/building something from scratch is always going to be an unknown entity, especially as I';m no design engineer, nor aeronautical theorist, but for some reason I had this idea in the back of my mind, to design & build (using resources at my disposal) a small quad, in the mode of the 250 mini, and by-eck, I seem to have done it!

I';m still trembling from the first test flight, although the power of hindsight would have told me that it would be a breeze.  It';s p****** down with summer rain outside, so I had to make do with a dining room  maiden.
Let me say firstly, that this CC3D is an absolute star, I mean I hooked it up to the GCS wizard, spent about 10 minutes going through the config & radio setup (Spektrum DX8 in this case) then discovered two motors reversed, so I re-soldered them and did one final test.
It appears to have two flight modes, if I recall correctly, Rate & Attitude but I have read very little about it, so I flew it on the second setting which seemed to self level better tan the other setting. (next task-RTFM!)

So, total AUW is 550 grams, it has a Spektrum AR 6115e 6 channel Rx, CC3D flight controller Emax 1808 motors, Afro 12a mini sec';s, a Zippy compact 1800 mAh 3 cell lipo, etc etc!

BTW: pls ignore the red tape on the Moby, it needs a 1/4" tripod screw, which I don';t have, but think number plate screws would do??!

Good news its in the air all be it inside.

Not really got that option here.

Hi Andy,
Nice to see it flying at last. Did you put the arms above the top dirty plate instead of between for any particular reason?
I';ve also had mine flying. (hovering in the bedroom.) Quite stable. Although now I';m changing the design of the front end.
I';m making a Back pack for the fpv camera and tx. All takes time but a lot of fun.
