Alternative To The GoPro

The  Veho Muvi HD10 could be a cheap alternative to the GoPro and can be found on Amazon at very good prices, It weighs about half of what the GoPro does and comes with a range of mounts and clamps, It also has a built in 1.5" screen unlike the GoOro and a remote control to activate recording or stills up to 5m range, It shoots the full 1080p at 60fps with a 90 degree angle or 720p at 60fps at a 170 degree angle, it looks like it could be a good alternative to the GoPro

Thats interesting although i havent bought a camera yet, I need to learn to fly better first or I would probably just end up smashing it, the picture quality deff looks better than the gopro in the comparison video a bit sharper and better colours  :D

I was particularly interested in the audio differential, I wonder if thats something that has been resolved on the hero 3 edition.

Thanks for sharing, it';s always useful to see the practical alternatives.

My big issue with all these cameras is the 170 deg lens as it just pushes everything into the distance

Other than a lens change on a go pro has anyone found a set up that has a more natural and less fish eye feel to it ?

I';m thinking a good HD camcorder with optical zoom and anti shake is probably the more versatile option with only a small weight penalty ?

The GoPro does have the option of wide, medium or narrow angle- at least my GP2 with latest firmware does

The FOV change just cuts down the width of the sensor that is read so while it loses the distortion from the edge it still makes everything look distant very quickly.

I';m tempted to go hero2 and change the lens

It sounded like the  gopro  was  in its housing ( in this  video)
W/o housing it  would sound  better.
But hero 3 BE has  much improved sound quality compared  to Hero 2

Hitachi HDSV01U from Argos, in the sale at around 60 quid.
Very similar spec to the one firey1 posted above....

FlyinMarty

The Muvi HD is very good, this is a video I made with mine
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0kRavyldE5U&feature=youtube_gdata_player

or you could use a Mobius,  small, light cheap http://joovuu.com/gb/21-action-cameras - I also have one of these, I have a couple of videos made using it on YouTube,  but since then there have been a couple of firmware updates so the white balance is much improved as are several other features
Blade Nano QX
Immersion Vortex 285
 Blade mCPx Heli

flybywire

Those side-by-side comparison demo';s do look convincing, and at half price of a a GoPro it does look like excellent value.  However, I';d hold back from hanging the new HD cam crown on it just yet, as for one, it';d take some engineering to get it into my H3-2D gimbal, plus obviously the GP 3 black';s will do 60fps at 1080.
Everybody';s on the lookout for a cheap but high quality camera that';s true enough, but I think until somebody matches the gopro spec detail for detail and at half the price, I still think the gopro is the best bet.
Just my opinion of course!

BTW I purchased one of these a few weeks ago: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Full-HD-1080P-DV-Mini-Waterproof-Sports-Camera-Bike-Helmet-Action-DVR-Video-Cam-/111181617297?pt=UK_AudioTVElectronics_Video_Camcorders&hash=item19e2f0d891

A sturdily built camera, ideal for strapping underneath your quad/hex, but it';s no gopro!
I haven';t flown with it yet, but when I do, I';ll let you know if it';s any cop.

I';ve ordered that waterproof cam myself after having a problem trying to get a mobius, looks like a decent camera!

guest325

Mine arrived yesterday, had a quick play with it and it looks to be well made and the mounting system is pretty good.
Initial trial (at dusk) show that it';s not brilliant in low light but the image quality is pretty good.
Picky of it on its most usable mount - forgot to mention, it looks like it could be Russian made!

jimbo385

So, how do you think these alternatives will compare to the GoPro?

Admittedly, they would have to be compared at 30FPS!

You can';t really compare a £40 camera with a £200+ one but in terms of bang for buck mine is excellent, only minus is it can';t be used for fpv - no video through!

I too have been looking for a reasonable GoPro alternative. I';ve stumbled onto this :

http://www.amazon.co.uk/CamOne-Infinity-Action-Camera-1080p/dp/B006M02RB2

Looks nice, small, AV out, comes with waterproof case etc..

Anyone seen or tried one?

andythilo

Oh plus you can change the lens, 96mm, 142mm or 170mm.

I have been following a FPV tread on a mainly fixed wing FPV forum and they have been doing back to back tests on the Gopro Hero3 Black and the Mobious. Looking at the footage the Mobious has a better picture but the Gopro has all the goodies, the thing that sells it to me is the Gopro is £250 but the Mobious is £64. The difference between the camera';s really does not reflect the price difference.
I will be buying a Mobious as my next FPV cam.

I';ve got a Mobius, but looking to get a cam to go on a gimbal alongside it (mobius as FPV only).

Very happy with the quality for the cost.

The Mobius has a much lower profile and is lighter, win-win. I love my Gopro black but I could have had 5 Mobius';s for the same money!!!  ~~

nub

hmmm the mobius is a good camera for the price but its no replacement for a GoPro IMHO.

I';ve got my mobius on a brushless gimbal I designed , comes in at about 50 quid for all the parts including motors/controller/laser cut parts.

I just checked the tracking info of my order - it';s stating it was delivered on 20th but I didn';t even see a postie on that day, let alone my parcel. :( Seller';s been notified I don';t want a refund but the camera. Will see what happens but this is soooo frustrating as there';s been some good flying days lately.

Apparently, the camera got all the way to royal mail (from china) and was returned for "security reasons" presumably the lipo? The seller is kindly resending registered airmail with a cap clip free gift (whatever that is)
