So ive been procrastinating about building a gyro tilt roll head to hold a DSLR type thing. Rather than jump straight in with the laser cutting, I thought id mock up a prototype, cut up with the bandsaw and very badly welded together (aluminium is a ******). It looks ok, im quite surprised!!

Will update as I go along.

Balders

I was sketching out a roll/tilt gimbal the other day.  For pan I just intend pointing the copter at whatever it is I'm filming.  Hoping the naza gimbal control keeps things flat and level.

Going to knock something up from ply hopefully this weekend.

Had a busy day banging, grinding screwing blowtorching, skipping around in agony, bandsawing etc.

Tadaa!!!!

Balders

Plugged mine into the Naza tonight. Need to tweak the gains a bit but not a bad starting point.

Looking good Balders deff needs a bit more gain on the pitch servo, look forward to seeing your first test video using this  :bravo:

Well I plugged it all up, and the roll servo was shaking very violently, I think maybe it was scared of heights and was a bit nervous. I changed it for a less terrified servo and now all is ok.

Well, its about as OK as it can be with these decent quality but standard nothing-special servos. (HS-645MG from Hitec)

Thinking I need faster servos. The vibrating from the motors is tollerable but the fact it cant keep up with tilting is a bit of a pain. My thought is faster servos will keep up. The ones im using are down at 0.24 (I think thats 0.24 seconds for a 60 degree move) and I have identified some faster hitec servos that are 0.6s/60deg. These unfortunatly are close to 80 quid each, but luckily I have a trade account with the distributors and I can get them for 59 each. Might try just one axis and see if it does keep up and if there is much of a differnce, if there is, il do the other one.

Also in this video you will notice the main column thing is FAR too long. Basically i promised myself I would adjust the length of this when I had all the parts together, before I welded the top on. I was very excited and jumped the gun and totally forgot to cut it down and welded it on anyway without thinking, so now it hangs really low it could do with being about 2 inches shorter. I cant re weld it with the servos in there caus the heat will melt them so il have to take it all apart and cut it down and re weld it.

Anyway, see what you think. not bad for a days tinkering (no money spent)

Tilt roll head

That looks very nice, and professional as well. With that shaft shortened it would be ideal.  I wonder how the servos would cope in real life. I mean I know you can physically out tilt them, but could they cope with the tilts required during a steady flight?

Very nice build. Well done.

Wow excellent job Pete, you will have to let us know what servos perform best once you've tried some  ~~ it looked like you had a large burn mark on your arm but I think it was the naza light  ;)

Balders

Don't mean to be hijacking this thread, but had a good mess around earlier today, throwing it around quite violently really (much more so than I ever would normal flying). Results aren't too bad at all...

Looks like its working quite well as you can see how much stick your giving it but the camera stays pointing at the table, the pitch seems to work better than the roll  :bravo:

Balders

yup all part of the tweaking...as you say the pitch looks spot on but roll needs a tweak.  The servo';s are different, I might make a Mk2 with decent servos and in aluminium.

Shortened the column, and extended the legs with some carbon tube. A bit long, need to cut the legs down a bit.
