Solved - intermittent 'live video out' from GoPro 3 Silver

After almost a week of trading emails back and forth with Kasey at GoPro I finally figured out the problem today. It isn';t really a problem but apparently a ';feature'; of the firmware.

I use the live video out from the USB port downlinked to a GS to help frame the shot. Earlier this week I took the quad up to test the gimbal tilt function and wasn';t looking at the GS although the camera was on, - but not recording. The GS screen was blank! For the next five days I';ve tried a whole lot of suggestions from Kasey - none of which solved the problem, until today. When I went to actually ';record'; a video of the failure it didn';t fail!

Bottom line - something to remember when using the GoPro';s video out.

1. If you';re not recording or playing back a file the ';live video out'; will turn off after five minutes.
2. If you';re recording it works continually.

Could this be the reason for some of the posts about GoPro';s losing FPV out - the camera wasn';t recording when they took off?

Anyway I thought I would pass this on. I could not find any reference to this behavior in the manual. By the way I received a response to my initial request for help within 24 hours and continual updates and/or things to test all along. I';ve heard bad things about GoPro support but I can';t complain, unless of course it was I, not them, that figured it out!

Hope this helps someone in the future!

Yup, and similarly auto power off / standby if not recording (on the GP3 at least). Whoops!

Can be disabled of course.
