Descending

Hi
I have a question about gains on my Hex (Tarot YF680) I spent quite some time setting the gains and I have got it pretty good except when coming down. Unless I descend very slowly and I mean slowly it starts to oscillate I think that would be the right term. I have tried different settings but seems to make no difference. Is this the norm when descending or can I do something to make descending smoother. It's not bad when I am in forward flight it's only when I am holding position.
Thanks.

Hi billmac
Oscillations on descent can be caused by the esc';s.  Have you tried flashing them with the simonk firmware?

Hi flybywire
no am using the DJI 30A Opto Would you recommend different type ESC

flybywire

I guess it depends on how much it bugs you.  My quad oscillates a little on descent too, but to be honest it';s not that bad, so I put up with it (the gimbal helps as well of course).  I';m currently building a hex, and I';ve ordered the ';new'; Afro esc';s from HK, they come pre-flashed with simonk.  I think others on the forum are using them, so maybe somebody could give us a heads up?  They are pretty neat really, as you can buy the little USB flashing tool specially designed for them, which uses the servo lead to update firmwares instead of having to cut the heat shrink and attach the ';tool'; to the chip.  ~~

I could live with it but it's a bit of a pain with all the comments I get from my flying buddies
I have never flashed esc's so will have to look into that
Thanks flybywire

The occiliation is caused by the Hexa descending into the turbulence caused by the downdraft from the props.  Keep some forward speed on, fly round in circles if necessary and the comments will stop.

turkuss

Just in case anyone is interested it';s called vortex ring .caused by descending into downward moving Colloum of air...
I'd rather have a full bottle in front of me than a full frontal labotamy

Does sound a bit like you need a dose of SimonK firmware.

RC legends do a nice one, pretty cheap:

Good luck

Nick

SimonK firmware does the same thing :)

I think it';s fair to say that a quad with a half decent controller should be able to descend at a reasonable pace without wobbling like hell.  Propwash is of course a consideration here, but if it does it at a very steady descent, then all the evidence is that simonk flashed ESC';s can be effective in reducing the wobble, certainly worth a try?  If smooth descents are important to you that is!

If mine wobbles on decent. I increase the Rate I setting a little at a time until it';s gone.
I don';t have a Naza but I would think the principle is the same.

Two things to point out.

1. It is not Vortex ring. See http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vortex_ring_state for the correct explanition of ortex ring.
2. With a Naza the amount of wobble is proportional to the rate of descent regardless of the type of ESC firmware.  SimonK will do it just as much as other firmware.

If you must descend straight down then do it slowly otherwise move laterally during the descent.

nub

i get bad wobbles on my quad when descending with a naza and flashed DJI ESC';s, i mean bad wobbles, its horrible better off taking a dive.

my nanowii is smooth as silk though, its like night and day.
Point and click.

Monkey see, Monkey do.

Ok video should be working doesn't look as bad as it actually is.
