Motor Upgrading advice

Since nearly none of the actual motors folk seem to use are in the ecalc thing, and hardly any manufacturer seems to provided the data it needs to enter it all manually I can';t really make any progress here :-(

I have a DJI450. standard 30a OP ESCs.

I have EMAX MULTI COPTER MOTOR 2212-920Kvs.

NAZA controller, and fly it in GPS mode always.

And I run it with 4s packs (mostly zippy compact 3700 jobs).

I run graupner 10x5s
All up weight is about 1500kg.

I get about 7 minutes flight time in reality before low battery flashes (and confirmed from recharging that I';ve done 2800 or so of capacity which is about all I';d want to pull out pack) - 90% of this in hover as it';s an aerial photography platform really.

It';s fine, but after a full flight, motors are hot to touch (not roasting,  but probably about 50-60).

It started a lot lighter of course, before everything else just stuffed onto it - originally it ran on 11x5 graupners and motors ran cool - but its too ';fat'; for those now... and even with the most efficient props for the weight its putting a sweat on :-)

I';ve flown it with a wattmeter - doing same flight again and again with different props, and these ones are the lowest watts used:

11x5
10x7
10x4.7 slowfly
9x5 carbon eprop
8x4.7 slowfly.

So for what I have just now, I think that I am at right prop size, etc (even though emax says use 8s with 4s, etc like DJI does).

However, ideally I';d like to have motors that ain';t hot on landing. Plus would a lower kv motor be more efficient for the type of flying I am doing ?

Hi,
I found that torxpower 2216 800kv are a great upgrade, on 10x5 E-props my F550 with a takeoff weight of 2820g on 4s 5000 gets around 13 mins using 4000 are cold to touch on landing, On my Disco with same motor';s that is on flee-bay at the moment 10x5 E-pros 4s 4500 loaded with FPV gear & Aee action cam, heli landing gear takeoff weight 1900g around 12mins,
John.

Just spent 5 mins composing a post & it dissapeared into the ether!   How annoying.

Powerlord, I have a very similar setup to you, I';m using these 2215 turnigy motors http://www.hobbyking.com/hobbyking/store/uh_viewItem.asp?idProduct=37204 (& 25a Turnigy red esc';s), and they only appear to get warm after a full flight.  I use 2 sizes of lipo, both 4 cell, 3300 & 5000.  The 5000';s have more grunt than the 3300';s, but actually flight times don';t differ massively.  Before adding my brushless gimbal, fligt times were:
5000 mAh 15 mins (75-80% discharge)
3300 mAh 12 mins (75-80% discharge)

After gimabal addition, you can knock 3 mins of flight times, or thereabouts with a safety margin.
In practical terms, I keep an eye on voltage levels, and never let my cell v drop below 3.5v, and you certanly wouldn';t let it go below 3.2 or you';d be a bad boy!
When it get';s to that level I';m always back within spitting distance. so no danger.  My motors & esc are nicely ';warm';, although I had 1 motor & 1 esc that got ';hot'; when I first built the thing, so decided to replace them to be on the safe side.
Don';t know the AUW off top of head, but will post it later 2day.
I also have the ezosd & set of 4 dji landing legs.
Hope this helps?

Watching with interest as I';m having similar thoughts at the moment.  I have an SK450 Deadcat which I';m using for FPV.  Not sure what the AUW is but with FPV gear, gopro and 3700 3s battery I doubt its particularly light.  I have 2830 1000kv motors with 9x4.7 props at the moment.

I';m wondering if these would be a better option http://www.unmannedtechshop.co.uk/rc-gear/bl-motor-esc/brushless-motor-3506q-530kv-high-efficiency.html along with larger props.  I think the theory being the lower kv motors draw less current for the same amount of thrust?

I think the downside of these would be it less acrobatic but as I';ve not had the guts to even attempt a flip dont think that would be an issue.

THey look pretty meaty.  I would consider 4 cell';s with those, maybe 11 or 12" props, if you have the clearance.  Have you checked ot HK';s range(s) of motors, they have similar spec to this half the price, just a thought.

Ah.  Spare would have been a good idea,  but usually I order my spares once I decide summit is good - otherwise the hoose would be full of even more useless crap!!!  O:-)
