Hi all I have just bought a single TTL 3DR radio telemetry setup.

I have plugged the air radio in to my quad via a cable into my APM2.5

and the ground radio into my computer using flight planner.

the computer recognises the ground radio and I have followed the instructions to set it up with MP.

when I try to connect nothing happens I have set com port 4 and baud rate at 57600 as suggested on  3DR robotics website.

The green led on the ground radio is just flashing green and the led on the air radio is green with the red led flickering.

ARRRRGGGH!! whats gone wrong, why wont they connect. have I missed something out or done something wrong????

please help X

BrianS

When in mission planner the 3DR Radio menu can you see both ends of the link.

tonygoole

hi brian,

No,  I only see the left side local.

tonygoole

Sorry I tell a lie. yes I see both sides but only the local side has data in it. I have copied data to remote but it only put half the data into the boxes.

BrianS

Have you got a FTDI-to-USB adapter to connect the remote end direct to your pc?

tonygoole

I just have the air radio into my apm2.5 and the ground end straight into the usb port on my computer.

BrianS

All i can think of is that the Net ID is different and with out a FTDI Usb acapter you cant connect the remote device to your machine to check the settings.

How far is the quad from the pc? i remember one of the radio setups would only connect within a meter or so until the antennas where changed.

tonygoole

Hi brian. Its inches from the pc. Is the fdti to usb same as ttl to usb?

Gaza07

Hi Tony have you tried swapping the rx / tx wires ? was the lead from the APM to the 3dr pre made or did you make it ?

tonygoole

hi Gaza

the lead was pre made, I bought it from build your xxx drone. would it still be worth while swapping the wires?

BrianS

A long as the remote end has power the radios should connect.

What make are the telemetry radios?

Gaza07

I would think if its pre made and for the APM to 3dr it should be correct, as some one else suggested maybe you should connect the air module to a FTDI adapter to check its functioning correctly,

There is a app for the modules you can get it here https://docs.google.com/file/d/0B4Pi876X3IIga1Z6NDUza040NnM/edit?usp=sharing

Thanks Gaza will have a look, yes a think i might have to invest in the FTDI cable. ~~

Back to the wires. At the radio the centre two are TXD and RXD. Just make sure they are reversed at the APM plug. Mine are red yellow green black at the radio and red green yellow (blank) black at the APM.

Don';t spend a lot of money, these things are cheap as chips.  I have something like this, they can be quite expensive from UK suppliers for some silly reason ... http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/FTDI-Basic-Breakout-Arduino-USB-TTL-6-PIN-3-3-5V-for-MWC-MultiWii-Lite-SE-/281108437391?pt=UK_ToysGames_RadioControlled_JN&hash=item41735e598f

You may also need a cable that will fit the TTL device (usually a black 4-pin large plug)  and the GPS (usually a tiny white 4-pin "Molex" connector).

You don';t have quad connected to Mission Planner via USB do you?  Can';t have both 3DR Radio and USB to APM connected at same time.

Have you checked that the connections are correct?

Drivers installed correctly for the FTDI adapter? It should show up as a com port in device manager.

tonygoole

Hi brian. It shows up as com port 5 in mission planner Leads are plugged in properly. Will check device manager tho
