Newbie balancing Gemfan props question

Hi Guys
While waiting for bits to arrive i have been learning how to balance my props.

Its quite easy to get them to come to rest exactly horizontal every time but that does not seem random enough to be perfectly balanced to me. Am i missing something ?

Should they stop at any position and in a different place each time and does what i have seen actually indicate a heavy hub or something.

Gemfan 11 X 4.7 by the way.

Regards
keith

philtrum

sounds like a heavy hub mate

hold prop vertical, if it goes to horizontal, add some weight to the hub on the top, until it stops doing it

I use CA and some kicker to make it set quick, but practice with tape first till you get the idea

Many Thanks

Had a go at adding a little weight with superglue to the light side and removing a little more from the heavy side.

I still cant get the prop to come to rest randomly. The final motion is very slow and gentle so i think its close before it comes to rest but its always still in exactly the same place. I don';t want to take too much material off around the hub and weaken it and having no previous experience of this i haven';t a real clue where that limit is.

What kind of balancer are you using. You could experiment by adding play doe or other similar removable material, you will soon see if your doing the right thing.

So, i now have a better balanced prop with a blob of blu tac on the light side.

Anyone have a good plan for how i either weigh the blue tac ! or translate its weight into araldite ?

Otherwise i haven';t actually achieved very much

philtrum

I use superglue and a spray to set it quick, works a treat
and as it sets almost instantly, you can build layers to get the weight right

The blob of blu tac i have is the size of a pea, it';s going to take a lot of superglue to equal that.

Is this really the method people use ?

None of my props have been so bad that they required anymore than a few small bits of aluminium tape on one blade, or a light sanding to get them right, so I cant advise how you should manage that one, sorry.

It would look like others have had problems getting them right too,  http://www.rcgroups.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1590567
