More FPV Flight, trying to fly lower..

Had a lovely couple of flights yesterday and at the weekend.  Trying to fly lower to the ground and this field is quite a challenge.  It has a steep slope on one side and I found I kept slipping off it as my eyes thought I was level where clearly I wasnt.  Next step OSD

Some nice views of the Severn bridges in this one, and make sure you listen to the scouts as they walk past my quad.  One of them trys to cast a spell on it

He had obviously just seen you flying it, and wanted to make it fly properly

I prefer to think he was so impressed with my flying he thought it was enchanted :-P

That was cool :)  It can be tricky to work out how high/low you are sometimes - but in the field from the first video you';ve got a handy few trees/bushes in the middle.  These are great for a reference point if you aim to fly between them at mid-tree level, then you';ll have a good idea of your height

Yeah my aim is to fly low and fast along the path and then turn around the tree/bush while staying low but haven';t quite managed it yet.  I like the added complication of the hill, makes for a more interesting challenge than a flat field

I went out again yesterday despite the wind, (the weather not me).  I appeared to lose connection from my transmitter as the quad just stopped responding to my input. I regained control briefly but I over corrected and was already very close to the ground so hit the dirt.

I';m using a standard tunrnigy 9x so was thinking this might be a good upgrade:

http://www.hobbyking.com/hobbyking/store/__14349__FrSky_DJT_2_4Ghz_Combo_Pack_for_JR_w_Telemetry_Module_V8FR_II_RX.html

Anyone using it?  Should be able to use failsafe I think not sure if the range will be improved?  I';ve seen some posts about the orange 433mhxz modules but the warnings about ';not plug and play'; and ';must know ardunio'; are putting me off.

CurryKitten

I pretty much swear by the FrSky kit now, I';ve seen and experienced brown-outs from 9X rx';s several times.  One thing though, the link you have provided, yes absolutely that';s the module to use - the DJT, but not that RX.  It';s says it';s a telemetry rx, but in this case it just means it binds with the telemetry module, it doesn';t provide any feedback.  Look instead at the dr8-II+ http://www.giantshark.co.uk/24ghz-frsky-receiver-d8rii-plus-p-407450.html this is a real telemetry receiver and the module will start beeping as the RSSI signal drops (in three levels of urgency)

It also has a proper failsafe (so you just put the switches/sticks where you want them in the even of a failsafe), which is essential if you have anything which will auto-land or RTH.

I';ve been out past 1km on my quad several times on FrSky, although your flying area/conditions will vary.  I can';t seem to get it past 1.6km in a plane, although others have gone beyond 3km with it.  It';s a very capable system

On the other hand, a friend of mine tried the Orange LRS system, made decent antennas for it, but the stock FrSky went further in all his tests.

The v8fr2 has proper safe mode.  I use exactly the combo u linked too.  My failsafe are programmed and tested.  You are right it has no feedback to tx when fs is activated but it still works fine

Yes - to be clear, when i was talking about the dr8-II+ having a ';proper'; failsafe, that was in comparison to the 9x rx';s.  The v8fr2 most defaintely works well, I was just annoyed as I';d bought two previously as they were listed (and still are) as telemetry receivers.  I think the description is misleading.  I still think it';s worth paying an extra few pounds to have an audible RSSI warning as well.

I have that receiver and accompanying transmitter module for my Futaba T9CHP but yet to swap out with the futaba receiver.  I need to to make full use of the NAZA failsafe and to get the range warning beeps too.

Gav

Finally maidened my FrSky 2.4 module and receiver combo for Futaba transmitter yesterday.   Fpv';d the quad over a ridge on a hill in the country with big bushes for extra blocking material and yep the transmitter module started beeping warning me about low signal.  I like it.  Great peace of mind and with the added failsafe RTH setup it feels even better flying off further for an exploratory fpv flight.

dp106

I';ve set mine up as well now and seems to be working well.

Managed to get failsafe working to a degree. I don';t have GPS on the Naza so can';t have full RTL failsafe. Instead I have set up my gear switch to turn failsafe on. With this on it goes into attitude mode and lands itself. I then set the failsafe on the rx to have the gear switch enabled so if I lose signal it should at least level off and descend. Tested it last night and it works a treat :-)
