An interesting news article found via Slashdot today.  One enterprising chap has exploited some of our technology to create a cost-effective camera stabilisation platform.  Unlikely to have come about through any (many) other routes, I';d say.

QuoteVideographer Tom Antos created this advanced DIY camera stabilizer which he demonstrates in this video. Although this surly isn't as sophisticated as the MōVI M10 handheld 3-axis digital stabilized camera gimbal, its still quite impressive and only cost a few hundred dollars if you feel like building it yourself.

Yeh iv seen some of the china brushless gimbels on ebay, are also coming with handle bars so you can use them as both, as a stabilizer on the copter or handheld.

you could add another control board for the 3rd axis, iv seen some people do that on the gimbles.
