LiFePo4 batteries...

Hi Everyone,

Found these beefy looking batteries on Hobbyking DE

http://www.hobbyking.com/hobbyking/store/uh_viewItem.asp?idProduct=19719

At 60 quid thats quite a bit of mah'age. What im wondering is, LiFePo4 battery... Anyone have any experience with this? Apparently they are safer. I have seen LiFe battery on the list on my charger so I should be able to charge them.

Anyone have any real world experience with this type of battery?

Hi Pete I don't really know much about these packs except they are much safer to use and the Heli guys use a lot of them 2s for the receivers because they don't need the voltage regulator which removes some thing from the equation that can fail,

In the link you supplied there has only been 1 review and he has only given it 1 star , I use the zippy brand lipo's and they have been very good, so I wouldn't question the quality, I think with anything new there is always a risk that your the one testing it and it could turn out not so good, on the other hand it could be very good, maybe its worth a punt on 1 and see how you go with it, as you say your charger supports life so you wont have any problems there,

It looks like a pack that will have a lot of power but it does weigh around 1 kilo  :o

here's a couple of links for a bit of info that may be usefull

Hi Gaza,

They do a zippy thats 8000mah for a bit less thats LiPo. That may be worth it over the LiFe, as I know lipos work, even if they do scare the ****** out of me.

The video is nice too, Its amazing, there must be one company in china pumping out PCBs and buttons by the million and everyone buys them in bulk and packages them up in their own boxes. My charger looks different but has the exact menu system and buttons etc.

Might go with the LiPos at 8000mah to be safe. Its a 60 percent increase over the 5000mah batteries im using now...

Thanks.

My charger also works identically, despite being branded differently.

I get the impression LiFePo4 batteries are safer than lipos and simpler to charger but not quite as good on the power to weight ratio.

It might be better to stick with what you know works and wait to see how the life packs develop  ~~

wow they are huge you could weld with them, I agree stick with what you know, lipo's arent that bad as long as you don't abuse them  ~~

Hi. Are you still playing with lifepo4 ?

I seen this pack from HK..  If you make pack with realy good A123 cells with high discharge at least 70A  like:
http://www.a123systems.com/lithium-ion-cells-26650-cylindrical-cell.htm
you shoud have for example 4s 2300 A123 - 300g (without wires etc ),  4s 4600 A123 -  ~620g

or cells not yet tested by me :
http://www.battery-matrix.com/K2-Energy-50C-90C-2500-2600mah-High-Power-LiFePO4-26650-Rechargeable-Cell-3-2V-2600mAh-90A-Rate-3-2V8-32Wh.html
I have info from suplier that K2 provide 30-40A at least continuous discharge, but they are same weight like A123. (75-85g)

Do you think they made 4s 8400 with 1kg only ?.. In my opinion this pack shoud have bigger weight or that cells are not good enough.

I will update this thread till i will receive my osd with current sensor and more better cells like ANR26650M1B
B are newer than A because have 2500mah with  70-90A continuous discharge too.

I you want somethink for your multirotor buy them..
http://www.hobbyking.com/hobbyking/store/__14071__ZIPPY_Flightmax_4200mAh_5S1P_30C_LiFePo4_Pack.html
but im not sure about real Cont.discharge in this pack.
Everywhere on websites informations are copied and pasted to their own webs and sellers doesnt know about real specifications.

HK seeling new olevin power cells:
http://www.hobbyking.com/hobbyking/store/__16575__A123_3_3VB_Lithium_Ion_2300mAh_Single_Cell_Battery.html
Are  they 70g ??? or 100g ??

No one knows.

Good thread about cylindrical cells:

And good movie how lifepo4 are safe , this is example of noncylindrical (prismatic) cells :

Let us know if you have any life cells or you planning to buy one of them.
Good luck.
