MultiWii 2.2 + GPS HOME problem

Heyya guys,

I have tried my bird (Crius AIOP V2) with MW 2.2... In horizon mode it flown really nice, so I have tried the GPS HOME function (the GPS was locked of coz), and the bird just followed the last direction and sinked (lost altitude)

It behaved like not the "SkyNet" driving it, just like lost signal or something, slide to 20" and sink quickly...switching back to horizon mode and all fine...

Is there anything I must set in WinGUI or in MWConf for the GPS HOME?

Many thanks,
B.

Have you calibrated your compass and if you have did you check it with another compass to make sure its pointing in the right direction if the compass is off the RTL wont work correctly,
It might also be worth powering up your copter while watching the gui to see if your compass is being messed up with the power lies on your copter  ~~

yeah ... this is the challenge I';m currently facing ... There doesn';t appear to be enough space between the top and bottom plates on 450 clones to get the FC far enough away from the induced magnetic fields from the power distribution ... placing the FC on the very top with the power distribution at the bottom appears to be required ...  waiting on new arm as I noticed a crack in one while testing before rebuilding like this and retesting GPH hold/RTH.

bulesz

Thanks guys for the reply, yes I have calibrated the compass and the acc as well that was my first to do, but I haven';t checked with powered up only with USB.

I';m waiting for my new frame and new ESCs... (I have used HK SS ESCs, but they seemed to be too slow for multicopter, and I had two major crash because of them...the motor stucked "weeeeee" noise and instant diagonal loops and crash...I couldn';t do anything... I have ordered a Simonk ESC from Rctimer now)

Now I';m on rebuilding my quad based on a bigger frame (Reptile deadcat from GoodluckBuy) so I will try to place the power distributor as far as I can...due protection maybe I will put that to the top and the FC between the two level as sandwitch...or back the PWD board below the battery bay... ?

So if the compass is set and checked with power up, I could use the GPS HOME? Nothing else need to set etc (my GPS worked/locked fine)?

Cheerz,
B

Hi bulesz once you have built your copter calibrate the compass and then check it with the compass on a smart phone or camping compass so you know when the copter is pointing in the right direction,
Once you know your compass is working as it should then plug in the usb and battery and arm the copter, it is best to keep hold tie down or even remove the props from your copter for the test, then power up the mtors and watch the compass in the gui if it doesnt move your good to go, but if you moves about as you rev your motors then your compass is being affected by the magnetic field of the power rails / distrobution board and your compass just wont work correctly  ~~

Well got a v2 bottom plate and soldered everything up and hung the FC from the top plate as high up as possible ... a quick test shows magnetic deviation of 4 degrees when the motors are at full speed (with no props on) previously this was  more like 35 degrees ... only 2 things I dislike about this at the moment ...1/ one of the posts I';m using to hang the FC is right in front of the usb port so o flashing firmware without some disassembly.  2/ the nylon screw heads are where the battery sits so I';ll need to add some padding.

now to complete reassembly and retest GPS hold.

bulesz

Thanks for sharing, my parts will be here in few days, so next week I can rebuild my bird and try the "SkyNet" ... :)

So does ~5" deviation because of the throttle sound to be fair..with a beer/cider? :)

(I have built my quad on a new frame (Deadcat reptile from Goodluckbuy) so I could increas the distance between the FC and the power board.)

Cheerz,
B

*** EDIT ***
Regarding to the GPS mission, am I thinking right these steps?
1. power up the radio
2. power up the bird
3. connect the EZGui via BT
4. check the GPS (usually I have around 6-8 sats)
5. arm
6. fly
7. be brave and switch to GPS HOME
8. enjoy (?) :)

Just have red this topic

...and I was enlightened...so I MUST use GPS HOME + Horizon / Angle mode in the same time? (both filter)
If I just set GPS HOME alone, it won';t work... ??

Gaza07

You should use Angle as Horizon is a mix between acro and angle and is meant for people learning to flip because it will auto level once the sticks are left alone  ~~

Thanks! I know now, my "enlightened" process is in progress... :)

So for GPS HOME I need: ANGLE + BARO + MAG + GPS HOME?
or
ANGLE + BARO + MAG + GPS HOME + GPS HOLD ?

That wasn';t clear to me after the MPNG that I have to use modes together!
I mean I have tried the GPS HOME alone (without even ANGLE) and I was surprised why didn';t work...  :hmm:
ehhe...

(EDIT: forgot the MAG from the ingredients :) )

barneyg

Finally got time to take mine out again.  I took the back off my 9xr this morning and tightened up the friction plate for the throttle ... This made a major difference when Yawing today :)

So after getting a nice 8 satellite lock I armed thing and took off.  Flew around a bit to get a feel for how the wind was affecting things ...  and flicked on POS Hold ... and it stayed pretty much where I left it ... no sign of the wandering off in a random direction from last time.    Then I turned that off and flicked on RTH ... and what do you know it moved to where it had taken off from.  I';m not sure if magnetic deviation due to the motors was making it crab or not but I on the whole was pretty happy with how it performed.

That is how I read it ... In multiwii gui I just set the check boxes for angle, mag, baro, gps hold on aux 2 and angle, mag, baro and gps rth on aux 4.

I had a play with horizon mode today ... I think I could get to like it for general flying.

Gaza07

You also need to enable the Mag (compass) when using any of the gps funtions because the gps doesnt know which direction its pointin in with out it so

GoHome =  Angle / Marg / Baro / GpsHome
Loiter =      Angle / Mag / Baro / GpsHold

Make sure you have calibrated your Mag or your copter might fly away in the wrong direction  ~~

Thanks guys for making me clear.. :)

Barney, it';s glad to hear that your bird has cured! I hardly wait to go outside to try out my new knowledge... :D

barneyg

Indeed ... though I do have to wonder if the problem I had was in fact related to having the right options enabled  (angle etc) I can';t remember if I set them how they are now before or after I';d tried last time.

I did have one run away when in RTH mode I';d upped the RTH P rate to see if I could make it move faster when RTH (it is quite slow).  Things got a little out of control and I thought I';d turned it off but when I got things on the ground I found I hadn';t.  I flew the quad into a tree ... I was quite lucky ... I cut the trottle just as it hit ... the quad flipped through the branches, when it cleared them it was the right way up ... I maxed the throttle and there was just enough time for it to cut the velocity to something around a slightly heavy landing rather than a total crash :)

bulesz

Yes, I know what you mean, yesterday I just tried out the rigidity of the props in a props vs tree situation... :)

Gaza07

I had one once try to fly through the bathroom window

:) these "precise" flyings need the real Man!  :D

Bad luck last night, I have teared/plucked the shaft screw on the fields while installing the props...so I don';t love my SK3s anymore, and I will go for SunnySky X2212 980KV. I fed up with the poor quality of the SK3 (bad bearings as well, vibration...). So I couldn';t try my new settings...

Preparing my quad for the next round, came to my mind, I have red somewhere that until the final FPV kit is ready, put the same weight object to the same place where the FPV equipments (camera in my case) will be and do the tuning with that configuration.

So I needed find something or someone brave candidate for this honorable job. I think I have found the right one... :D

I';ve got these ... not had anything to compare against but I do like them ... will swing a 10x5 on 3S but I';ve been running with 9x4.7 at the moment.  One of the prop adapters is a bit off true now but I think that may be more down to a crash I had when trying to get Megapirate to not flip 5 seconds after taking off :)

Exactly that';s why I have chosen Bob as co-pilot. :D

I have met the SunnySky motors when I was seeking mine, but when I have seen the brand name, I was thinking it is too Chinese for my taste, it is impossible that this is a good motor with this name...SunnySky...come on! :D

So I have chosen the SK3 as "new generation of motor design and quality, bla bla".

I was wrong! The SK3 is cheapy crap and as I have heard and seen many places the SunnySky motors spec the X and V series are truly etalon.
