EMax Babyhawk II HD

Bad Raven

Way back in eary spring I received a BH II HD, a shorter than longer freestyle quad.  I bought it to get a quick start with DJI HD Digital, buying the Goggles V2 at the same time.

This failed dismally, firstly when the Goggles V2 were significantly delayed, and then when they arrived and I started to set it up, I found the FC was faulty and Motor 4 would not run!

This still has not been resolved, EMax not having parts to send to retailer, though they are now reportedly with him awaiting fitting.

With my life passing before me, last week I cracked and bought another. My thinking was that if and when No1 does appear, I can likely sell or split, as both have the currently now unobtainable but highly regarded CADDX "Pro" camera.

This second one just reinforced the view gained from the first that EMax have largely thrown this out there. For a PNP "ready to use" model its way below EMax's normal standards of recent years, however, it did reach flight status after near three hours work!

And then..............high winds and torrential rain.............

Anyway, finished with a FrSky R-SR Rx and ready to fly with the largest recommended pack, 4S 850mAh, it comes out at a genuine 248g.  ~~

Hopefully Monday will be flyable, my next chance.  :crossfingers:

Bad Raven

So, rather delayed by COVID, its been flown four packs each day for the last three days.

Currently its not nervous enough for me, with roll and pitch significantly slower than my ideal. Not had time away from field to change things, maybe tomorrow.

The other and bigger "irk" is the batteries. Stuck with near zero stocks anywhere I broke a promise to myself to never buy Gens-Ace again.  And ended up with TATTU R-Line 850mAh 95C 4S.

Initially they caught me out as to how rapidly they go from OK under load voltage and holding up to desperately low voltage and a struggle to get back to landing site. Its a pretty vicious sudden plummet and not one I'm at all satisfied about.

This is common to all four packs I bought.  I have not dragged more than the one pack down to around 3.3v per cell on say one cell while realsing just how iffy their end charge drop was, then became super careful, yet all four packs are already not charging to 4.20v, with signs of excessive internal impedance, exactly the reason I stopped using them a couple of years back.

They recover voltage back more than other packs, but that's no compensation for the cliff edge to "land now" you fly with every time.

OTG cable + Speedybee app   ~~

Yes, thanks, I have had those for ages, but find it very inconvenient to view the small screen in daylight unless buried into the back of the car and its not good even then. And I can't be bothered to take laptop, being lazy!!

Also of course there is Smart Audio, etc, but I guard my field time and playing around eats into flying time for the quads that don't need adjustment.

I changed it at home yesterday, and in a combinaton of adjustments have raised it by 150 degrees/sec to 800. Seems much better, in the garden at least.  BTW, my 5" setting is usually around 900 deg/sec.

Bad Raven

Just noticed from the Emaxmodel website that they are introducing an Analogue version.

Bad Raven

Thought you might like to see how BAD DJI digital can be by default with no set up tuning or mods.  As recorded on the Goggles DVR :blink

This is the BH II HD as supplied by EMax, with it and DJI goggles V2 settings strictly as it comes, so 25mW, focus mode on, etc, etc. Also Quad used strictly assembled as std, with video antenna of std ultra short length, so below the battery level and from some angles completely masked from LOS to Goggles even when not moving briefly behind greenery.

Light overcast, a little misty, extremely damp morning with trees sopping signal sapping wet (so watch for result of putting the quad out of LOS).

So, there you go, its not of course how you'd set up and use it, and might will by DJI fanboys be considered unfair, but its the "do nothing and use it" default quality, if quality is the right word. Poor focus, unacceptable pixellation, atrocious changes to white balance.

And yes, this IS with the "best" Nebula PRO camera!!!

Good Eh?  Well worth the money..............

Bad Raven

And here we are after some adjustment, a second short video for your comparison.  Note that the camera position is untouched as yet, it needs minor tweaking to centralise it and lose the frame just visible RH top.

Weather conditions very similar to the previous video, in fact had been raining a very fine but heavy drizzle with quite a black sky till a few minutes before this was recorded.

Better?   :D

Now to have a go at the camera position and see if I can better the white balance.

is this onboard DVR or DVR at the goggles?  I'm guessing at the goggles from your comments about going behind trees & some of the pixellation, although once YT has done its worst smearing pixels across the screen it's sometimes hard to tell :(

do you not have any OSD or does the DVR not capture the OSD that you can see in the goggles?

Bad Raven

Goggles DVR. Running at default settings. Auto start/stop.

A freestyle quad flight in the higher settings will be about 1.4Gb. There is also a text file (.srt) for each video which records data as follows, this being the power up for the flight on You Tube:-

DJI have their own OSD, but also allow Custom settings from many but not all the Betaflight OSD parameters to be imported and displayed (in a variety of ways I have not yet fully explored).

The default (obviously!  ) is not to record it.

badger1

it's all clever stuff, but I've resisted sticking my face in a set of DJI goggles so far as I can see it would be hard to go back to analogue.

I'm interested to see what the next iteration of Byte Frost/Shark Byte look like - I don't think they're far off having a good product.  maybe not as good as DJI but I'd rather go with system from a company whose core business is a bit closer aligned to the FPV hobby than DJI, & which probably plays better with analogue (having been stomped on by the DJI public channel when flying analogue).

Bad Raven

I decided that waiting for Fat Shark might stretch beyond my remaining life span!!  :whistling:

One of today's flights, with a bit removed from the middle to shorten it.  Two firsts in that, first time closely approaching the conifer base, and my first ever inverted yaw spin (with any quad).

Bad Raven

Just fitted a "Finder" to one. Got a weird halfway house setup currently.

Standard the thing is set for DShot ESc "Buzzer" (which is actually not too bad noise level wise).

I have tried several ways in Config to better what it does now I have the Finder, which is:-

All Betaflight alarms/warnings are on the Finder (Arming, Modes, etc) but the Tx switch buzzer refuses to work, still working on DShot.

Battery loss and Tx off loss are on the Finder.

badger1

what is the 'Finder'?

I have the URUAV UR6 buzzers on all my quads now, since spending a *very* long time looking for a quad in a very large grassy field:

I had the first BH II HD fall out the sky twice today (with a clean flight in between) from low level.  Both time it bent props badly and not curable by rebending. These were the HQ 3.5" ones, the only  others bar the EMax originals, which I bought hoping they mighet behave like DALPROPS a regards flex recovery.  I'd advise avoid!
