New radio for small hands? - Jumper T12 Plus?

I started 'playing' with quads about 3 years ago and as normal I was on a budget so I bought a FlySky i6. I have installed the modded FW and I do like the small size as I have small hands.

I think the gimbals are now failing. I can just replace the gimbals for about £6 each but I was wondering if it's about time to get a new radio as it's probably easier to get 'the budget' to replace a 'broken' thing than it is to upgrade. That said I have 4 quads with FlySky rx.

I noticed that there is a 'Jumper T12 plus' transmitter for about £80 with hall effect gimbals and a multi protocol JR module that runs OpenTX. It's actually smaller than the i6, I think and would work with my FlySky rx and allow me to use Frsky in future.

So has anyone used the Jumper type radios and if so are they happy with them?

Alternatively anyone suggest a small radio that takes modules?

Cheers for suggestions.
I try :-)

Hello All,

Just a little bit more information about T12's OpenTx compatibility.

This radio uses an OpenTX fork (a copy of OpenTx) named JumperTx and adapted for the Jumper T12 hardware.
This means that the T12 is neither supported by the OpenTx Team nor recognized by the OpenTx Companion.
(By the way, it appears that Companion can communicate with the T12 if one use aQx7 profile, but switch mapping ha to be adapted, at least for SF)

This means also that OpenTx updates cannot be applied to the radio. Only JumperTx updates, from the JumperTx team can be applied.

This is an point to take in consideration if one plan to buy a T12 for his "OpenTx compatibility".
Best regards,

Coyotte

If your after a small rig then wouldnt it be a bit more convenient to look at the newer style "gamepad like" tx's like the Taranis X-lite or Turnigy evolution, tbf I was pretty sceptical of the budget end Evo being any good when I first bought one but its a joy to use and Ive not touched my other TX's since.

FWIW I have the t12 plus and I love it.

I previously had the x9d+ with M9 race gimbals on both sides.  With my small hands, this was the perfect setup except for one thing...it's just overall too big. Before the x9d I had the devo 7e which I used to fly my micro helis. To me it was the perfect size. The gimbals just started getting really bad at centre stick so I upgraded it to the x9d.

When the T12 was anounced I was sold immediately on the form factor.  I worried about gimbal quality but after flying with the t12 for about a month, it is so good that I sold my x9d  ::)

Now with the T12, I can fit  everything into one small turnigy transmitter bag....this include 3 micros, batteries and goggles.

Yes, Jumper completely dropped the ball with opentx and because of that they will never get the full support from opentx.  Fingers crossed though, they have been quite responsive with their updates, having the latest JumperTX update within days of the recent new opentx release.

build quality is a notch under taranis' radios though but it doesn't feel like a toy and is solid. Mainly the inter face buttons are a bit toy like.  The switches are solid though and it sits in your hand solidly once the batteries are in.

The multi module works well and in fact outputs more wattage than my stock x9d+!

Crossfire works great as well...it is a bit of a pain to have to swap in modules if you have models on protocols other than crossfire since it doesn't have an internal radio

My brother has the x-lite which I had a play with. The gimbals although of good quality have a very short through. I'm a hybrid pincher and I struggled with the x-lite.  I'm sure if I put more packs in I'd eventually get used to it but I didn't like it from the beginning.

In conclusion, it's a great radio for me and ticks all the boxes. The biggest flag is what Coyotte pointed out - the future of this radio depends on some random overseas chinese company.  It's really kind of sad as the hardware is decent.  The way I look at it is, for now, it's working great and I'll enjoy it while it lasts and hope that by the time Jumper loses interest in supporting this model, the growing community can step in and take over the updates.

X-Lite is perfect for small hands (mine are!).  You can use this multi-protocol module:

I think this is the one my flying bud uses with his walkera gear.  Seems to work fine and he gets good range.

I had forgotten about the Turnigy evolution. At £26 it sounds a great deal. New small TX with rechargeable battery and rx delivered next day for £31!!! I might go for that.

Its a solid little bit of kit and even its currently shocking low price doesn't do it justice, I bought mine at roughly twice that price with the intention of just using it for Prox. Los sorta stuff but now use it on everything, I use it with x6b rx's to make full use of its handy if a little simple two way telem, plus its range seems great with those particular RX.

You might wanna order in some RX's though as the supplied one is notably larger than its ahds 2a kin... Though you can always strip off its crappy plastic card cover to slim it down a little.

All my current rx are Flysky so easy. I have iA10B, iA6B, x6b, Flit10 and an inbuilt one on Mobula7. So all good. It should arrive tomorrow  ::)

it'll probably come with turnigy's 1A6c (least mine did) which barring its telem has very few redeeming features, despite its twin antenna's I found its range to be sketchy beyond 150m max, the x6b easily out ranged it and has better features to boot (generally cheaper, Ipex antenna's for easy swap out, telem etc etc.... you use em yourself so you'll know).

just out of curiosity are you using the newer versions of the x6b's, only asking as I found the original versions only had failsafe on pwm and refused to work on ppm or I-bus, fine if your using old skool pwm setup but a bit of a nasty surprise if your using either of the other two.

I was lucky while using a older x6b as my tx battery died mid flight and instead of the expected failsafe kick in and the frame just cutting power it pretty much full speed buried itself into a huge pile of brambles..... which meant first a walk of shame infront of other flyers using the field then the"death of a million thorny pin pricks" as I tried to retrieve me angrily beeping frame from its bramble prison :embarrassed

did look into it afterwards but couldnt actually find any info on how to discern visibly which x6b's were old type or new type, literally have to slap em into a built setup whenever I buy em and physically test the failsafe kicks in just to be on the safe side

I had read about the X6B and it not having failsafe but the one I have (bought June 2017) when tested the failsafe worked correctly. So I just thought I had misread about the failsafes only working on PWM. So I guess it's a newer one. Do you think they are still selling the non failsafe ones?

Brambles are never good especially if you are wearing shorts!!! At least it didn't fly away.

It does come with an iA6C rx. I will probably just use it with a FTDI for playing on the sim. It's smaller than the iA6B I am currently using so I might even print a case for the 2  ::)

Cheers for the info.

whether anyone still sells the older one is impossible to answer as despite knowing I had atleast one of each (the v1 & v2) I couldnt side by side identify any particular physical/visual difference that stood out and would make identifying the versions possible, the differences must be purely software related and therefore the V1's can likely be simply updated to correct the issue (not that I could even find info about the update either ),  Everyone Ive bought since from a couple of different sources have all had the failsafe issue resolved though.

I do know I bought the original v1 non failsafe one from HK but havnt bought a x6b from them since as they didnt come with their cables which made things annoying, while ebay sellers always seemed to supply the cables.

I didn't use the cables as I soldered directly to the pads and had plugs to connect to FC as that needed plugs!

I seem to remember that there is a way to update rx FW but I can't remember how. I think it involves pressing the second button (not the bind one) but I don't know how to get FW or put it on tx.

I would guess they are all now the later fw with failsafes. I haven't tested the Flit10 rx yet, hoping for warmer temps. There is also a Fli14+ rx out which seems even smaller but I haven't looked at reviews yet.

think Ive got a couple of them knocking about (or atleast something similar), they were on discount on BG so I grabbed a couple, dont think Ive even used or tried them out myself either.

did find a handful of brand new FS-A8's while I was routing earlier and have absolute zero recollection of buying them, the feckers havnt even been taken out their bags... guess Ill have to make some more designs for them.... wouldnt want them going to waste :whistling:

No can't have kit going to waste and I do like your new builds.

Did the A8 have an issue, was it poor range or failsafe issues I can't remember.

shawdreamer

only ever used one an age back and even then only chucked it about the distance of a footy field length (which is shorter than its stated range), seemed fine enough there but there was plenty of people saying its range was a little stunted but most of them also agreed it improved with a antenna swap and even said the ones found on x6b's were ideal in both length and connector (the A8's and x6b's both use ipex antenna connectors).

tbf the a8's are probably designed more for use with mini frames (hence the size) and you'll rarely throw a mini out past 100-150m even on fpv so the range being around 150m isounds about right for a diddy rx.

The Turnigy Evolution arrived  ::)
Had a very quick play and feels good, nicely balanced in hands and the gimbals do feel smooth. I didn't think the gimbals in the i6 were bad but I guess after 3 years they have worn a little  ::)
I was surprised by how 'smooth' they felt. Before it arrived I thought 'how can gimbals be smooth?' now I know a little more what smooth feels like  ::)

Cheers for the advice.

Update after 2 weeks use.
Well I am impressed. With the leds off it runs for about 6 hrs of one charge. It will work and charge at the same time, so I can use the xt60 to usb adapter I have to charge from a lipo.
It bound to all my Flysky rx no problem at all. The 5 stored models isnt as much an issue as you might think. All the rx are bound to the tx not bound to a specific model memory. This may be a plus or a minus depending on how you fly. i.e. if all your quads are setup to use the same switches and end points you can just use 1 model memory for an unlimited number of receivers!!!! Even the rx voltage readings seem to be setup so that the tx automatically works out the cell count and gives cell voltage not batt voltage, so 1S to 6S all on same model memory!! Obviously if you use different switches for each model this could be an issue as all models are bound irrespective of the model number you select!!! For me it's fine.
I have printed a neck strap adapter for when flying at the field as would probably put the tx on the ground and then stand on it otherwise!

The gimbals do seem nice and smooth and all the tensions can be adjusted once you open it up. Even though I am not a gamer it sits nicely in my hands and feels comfy, even after 2 hrs on the sim.

It has some nice logic in it, in that if you try and switch it off while a bound rx is powered on it will ask you to confirm the switch off. If no rx on then it just powers off from the power switch. The 3 timers are good (2 switch activated 3rd throttle % activated). All the menus are easy to get to the only thing I can't seem to find is an rssi alarm.

For £25 it really is amazing.
Cheers for your help and advice.
I try :-)

I did think about your clip but the way the tx goes in my carry case it is already a bit tall. So if I added your clip it wouldn't close. I printed this one https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:2644088 it needed a bit of sanding but that's probably my printer, but it snaps in and the cover still fits on.

basically it allows me to have a in-hand fpv feed via otg to my old samsung s3 that was sitting round doing nothing, gives me quick access to pid settings etc through the osd, also works as a fpv dvr if needs must, normally youd have a monitor/phone positioned at the top of you tx but I found it would have made everything way way WAY to top heavy and uncomfy to use so tried it beneath, Tx keeps its balance quite well and it doesnt weigh enough to be a bother either.

everythings still accessible, no switches obstructed and it still fits into the protective cover and therefore the belt/wall clip ~~
