Upgrade Problems

Hi guys

I have been flying a Eachine Falcon 250 on and off for a couple of years now. It has seen a bit of action and was starting to wobble very slightly on hover.

As I have recently done a few upgrades to the FPV system, I decided to replace the motors. As i stripped the heat shrink back off one of the ESCs, I noticed one of the capacitors had come off (which may be the cause of the initial wobble).

I ordered a new set of ESCs and after a bit of messing around (Okay alot of messing around) I managed to get them all working. Part of the reason I had so many issues was that one of the motors wasn't working correctly and it took me a while to fault find as I wasn't sure if I had messed something up down the line. So I put on one of the old motors hooked up to one of the new ESCs.

Unfortunately it is now flying incredibly wobbly on hover (I haven't tried anything else). I was just wondering if the lovely community on here could point me in the right direction to sorting it as I have no clue.

Cheers

James

:welcome:
OK so you don't mention what Flight Controller (FC) you are using, the esc or motors.
I assume you have calibrated the esc, if they need it? i.e. are you running DShot esc protocol? If not you need to calibrate esc in the FC software, remember PROPS OFF!

If esc are calibrated as necessary are the props all in good condition, no chips, bends etc?

Are you running a recent version of BetaFlight?

You are running 4 motors the same are you? Not 3 new 1 old? that could make things interesting.

With a bit more info from you we can probably get you sorted.
I try :-)

Hi Ched - Thanks for replying!

The FC is the original one. It says CC3D on it (no idea if that is relevant) and I have linked it to my computer using LibrePilot. I have adjusted the neutral throttle position using that.

If that isn't calibrating the ESCs then no I haven't done that.

The props are in reasonable condition - not brand new but I was using them before I started changing stuff out and although there was slight wobble it was nothing compared to how it is now.

I am running 3 brand new one and 1 old. I know that this may be the cause of the wobble but just wanted to check with people who actually know what they are on about :P

Cheers

Just a quick reply. You have replaced the esc soo you do need to calibrate them. This involves using LibrePilot and removing props. There should be a 'motors' page where yoou should be able to calibrate the esc. It goes something like set in cal mode. Plug in battery, beep, move throttle stick to max, hear beep, throttle down to zero, beep and you are done.

Have a search for Librepilot and calibrate esc on youtube.
Remember PROP OFF!!!!

Hope that helps, sorry have to go out now.
I try :-)

Hey

I have calibrated the ESCs and it does seem to fly very very slightly smoother but it is still all over the place.

Is there anything else I could give a go?

Cheers

I assume you are in some sort of stability flight mode?
I don't really know what would happen with 1 different motor. It's not just the kV rating but different torque, weight resistance, so many differences I am not sure a good old CC3D will be able to cope. Can you fix the faulty motor one or get a replacement?

The CC3D is very old technology it must be a good 3 years out of date! The latest F4 flight controllers are so much better you would not believe how much easier they make things.
The default PIDs will work with most builds plus things like built in OSD, dynamic filtering to name but a few.
I try :-)

I will be honest, I have never stripped down a brushless motor so I don't fancy my chances!

Intact it it the same motor I had to put bullet terminals on because the solder wouldn't take so there may be some corrosion or something in it.

Money is the limiting factor here. The ones I ordered are only £30 but I am spent up at the moment. I was looking at upgrading the receiver and FC down the line but I am going to Uganda in 2 weeks ( I was hoping to fly the drone there) so it will have to wait untill I get back.

I may just have to put the original motors and ESCs back on if I can't sort it.

Thanks for your help though :)

We don't give up that easily round here  ::)
OK so in the receivers tab have you set all the control inputs so they centre correctly (1500)?
Are min and max set, i.e. do they go up to 2000 and down to 1000? If not adjust them, can't remember if there is a calibrate in Libre or you might have to do it in tx with endpoints but not ideal.
Have you calibrated the gyros? Basically there should be a way of placing the quad perfectly level then telling FC to calibrate this as level.
PIDs these are the terms that the FC uses to try and get the quad to the position you tell it to via the sticks. These are tricky as set wrong they will give oscillations!!! So have a search for your model of quad with 'PID' and see if you can find someone elses settings. Before you change them note down your current ones so you can go back if necessary.

Hope that helps? If not come back and hopefully someone might remember back to CC3D better than me  ::)
I try :-)

Assuming you have upgraded your motors, your tune will be out, this will produce oscillation.

What motors and ESCs did you upgrade to?

Clarkie 22

This is what I am looking at right now and I presume this is what you ment by receivers tab.

I have calibrated the gyros and it doesn't seem to have made a difference. I will have a look at PIDs but at the moment I have not started flying in acro mode (if this makes a difference).

The motors are 12A Brushless BLHELI 2300KV

and the ESCs are  Makerfire 20A Brushless ESC

Problem, in part, is the age of what you are dealing with linrepilot stopped supporting cc3d about 2or 3 years ago. That is a long time in this hobby,

Can you try again with motors and ESCs? Perhaps link to what you bought?

(Blheli is an esc software, it has nothing to do with motors which brings to which software is running on the ESCs?)

Pids are used in all flight modes

ched

First off contact Amazon about the faulty motor. they should replace it free. So then you have a set of 4.

PID's are used in all flight modes!! The motors and esc you have are different so with the CC3D you will probably need new PID settings. Have a youtube search on cc3d and setting pids.
That should help, but ideally only when you have 4 matching motors.

Just to let you know incorrect PIDs will give you oscillations and instability!!!!!
I try :-)

Clarkie 22

Well I have a new set of motors on the way and I will have a go at setting the PIDS after I get it installed.

Thanks for. ll your help :)

Clarkie 22

Got the new motors installed last night and after some messing about I ran the setup wizard and loaded settings off librepilot for the drone.

Now flying sweet as a nut :)
