Crashed my quad this afternoon after less than five minutes flying. First decent weather in a while and I break both the arms on the front.

Rebuilt now by nice day wasted and likely to rain tomorrow.

I was trying to fly it in without auto level as I figure that';s how I should be. Trouble is its easy to lose orientation and I stuffed it up. Thing is I don';t really lose orientation flying with auto level on and am more relaxed flying. I was getting reasonably good flying without auto level but with all this wind recently haven';t been brave enough to turn it off.

Feeling a bit disheartened by it at the moment :(

sausageroll

Same thing happened to me, a propeller flew off our big quad and it fell from about 60ft and was a total write off. Its annoying I know how your feeling.

Stick at it though. If you can justify it, a controller like hte GPS naza is a good idea, caus you can fly it manual then if you panic flick GPS on (i call it the hand break) and the naza will take over and hover it, then you can re orientate and carry on, or you can put it to failsafe and it will land itself. Its a good investment really, it may save your multi tens of times from dumbthumb crashes.

Keep at it, dont give up yet.

Pete.

If I';d have given up because I';d crashed a model I would have given up a long time ago; my first two planes were binbag material within the first month of ownership! It was soul destroying but I came through it and carried on; after  almost 2 years of learning to fly I';m soon going to go in for my BMFA A test. It has been an uphill struggle but  I';ve persevered with  it and finally getting somewhere. I';ve got 3 of my 12 models that have been extensively repaired and mostly use them for training; occasionally I fly one of my other 10 models to stop boredom setting in.
So far it has cost me well over £1000 trying to learn; and I know that it will cost me a hell of a lot more before I';m done, bear it in mind I';ve never spent over £100 on an airframe.
Keep with it -its one of the most rewarding hobbies you can get involved with!

dp106

Cheers guys :) New arms on the quad now so ready to fly / crash again. I think I might get another dji clone frame making my own h quad was rewarding but it';s not very crash resistant!

fruitsalad

even the best pilots crash sometimes,if they say they dont there lying.
boy ive had some bad ones, but i find its a great excuse to get that new plane or frame youve seen.

keep at it  ~~
dont grow up,just buy bigger toys!!!!

Biffa

Must have been a day for crashes yesterday

Tricopter into the metal fence - luckily no damage. Blade 400 ';hard landing'; flybar and tail shaft and poss main shaft and finally my Depron 3DX crashed about 10 times as I was practicing prop hanging and after a new nose section being put on, then repaired, repaired twice again and finally breaking the wing in half it went in the weelie bin

dp106

For me its frustration. I can fly fine if I leave auto level on but struggle as soon as I turn it off. Not helped by only being able to fly with it off if there';s no wind.

Augerin

I can fly fixed wing Ok, self taught and must admit there were one or two crashes along the way.  But to get there its practice, practice, practice.

Took my quad out first time yesterday and it bit me big time. Two arms to source now. Mine has no auto levelling and I';ve never flown a heli or the like before. Was not a happy camper, but got to get back on that bike again and practice, practice, practice.

It there a good multirotor flight sim? I find Phoenix to be not that realistic when it comes to quads.

Gaza07

Phoenix is a cracking sim probably the best for helicopters but sadly lacking in the multi rotors department
But if you already have phoenix then keep practicing on one of the larger helicopters and if you can get good at hovering them or flying them around the quad will be much easier  ~~

philtrum

Agree with pheonix sum, its great for Heli, there';s a haying quad in there but its uber stable,  if you can fly the blade 500x about for example. The orientation is the same as the quad, with no auto level.

Many Thanks

Well just to cheer you up, my Wot4 went in this morning, another Gens ace lipo gone down; had to do a dead stick landing and didn';t quite reach the strip - landed in rough ground and longish but sparce grass. Lost my undercarriage,  but hey ho got it home and got to work with the epoxy - now fixed. Time spent - 20 mins Cost - about 50P in epoxy;  no complaints there!

dp106

Well I went out again today but the wind has picked up again so had to leave it in auto level. It now seems to have developed a fault where it doesn';t want to yaw to the right. Will do if I stop still but not while travelling forward :-/

keep at it man. over the years i have crashed, smashed, blown up, miss-wired and lost thousands of pounds worth of models. thats why im soo clued up now;)

Hey dp106, what flight controller are you using?

Someone here might have an idea as to your problem. Maybe you will need to retune some of the flight parameters??

There are a few people who can fly almost straight from the off. They are in the minority. Most of us (I don';t count myself as a quad pilot yet, only fixed wing) have to keep at it for weeks/months/years to get anywhere like proficient.

Good idea with the heli training. Hover mowers have never appealed before, but It';s never too late to start!

I';m running a kk2.0 at the moment but have a naza on the way :)

Cozp83

dude, the naza will build your confidence back up in a single flight! flight controllers like the kk are great if ya wanna tinker and test. if you just wanna fly the naza m is the one. if ya need any help getting it setup just ask man. also if ya have the problem of your esc';s not firing up with the naza i have a very easy cheap solution;)

Oh? Why might they not fire up?

Cozp83

the naza takes a few seconds to boot up, so in this time because the esc';s dont get a signal from the naza they go into a kinda of safe mode. flashing them with simonk etc. gets rid of this somehow. what ive done is make a splitter from the battery so i plug the naza in, then the escs. make sense? couldnt be bothered flashing them and it flies great, as a quad!

dp106

Ah ok cool. I';ve got a cable coming from Hong Kong to flash mine, (coming by horse I think!) Do you have to cut the BEC from the ESCs when connecting them to the naza or can I leave it?

I just pop the red connector out of the socket (with a pin) and heat-shrink it, just saves having to cut the cable.

Ah good idea, I';ll do that then I can always put it back in if I want to use the kk2 again

Well my Naza arrived today :) Kinda expected it to be bigger considering the price :)

First question, when I mount it do I have to leave it ';open'; ? My current frame is a DIY job and the kk2 is protected by a tupaware container. Not very stylish but does a good job! Thinking as the naza has a barometer covering it with a tupaware box would be a bad idea..?

Gaza07

The Naza should work fine in your tupaware container to  ~~

ok cool, the barometer will still work then?

Gaza07

Well you must have some holes in the tub for the cables and stuff so yea it will work  ~~
