Xiaomi MI drone, good bad or ugly
« on: September 04, 2017, 19:45:38 »
So in the quest for a replacement for DJI i stumble across the MI 4k gimbal drone, at first glance it looks to be a viable replacement for my P3s, but is it good, is it bad or just plain ugly, can any one give there thoughts on this

I think i can answer my question myself......ugly, looking on youtube it seems to have a design fault allowing the battery to work its way out in flight, rules this one out

I might be wrong, but do i detect a tiny bit of cynicism  ::)
I dont want to buy a drone to then have to duck tape the lipo in, as you can tell this is the quest to try to break free from DJI, but i keep coming back to thinking the new P3 SE will be perfect......other than stress cracks and dodgy firmware  ;)

Why would you buy a drone when you can build your own?
Exactly to your specification and will do exactly what you want it to do...
the tech is out there do with it what you want..   ::)
Carbon Tricopter with KK2 mini because you have to own a Tri and Falcon Evo FPV (rebuild again) with fatshark 600mw vtx & pz2040 cam. New addition (hidden from the missus!) 250 quad.

I have looked into another self build, but the cost of a camera and gimbal that can match even the P3s just takes the job over budget

good to hear from a happy customer, on paper it looks good, have you had any issue`s with the App, and what sort of range are you getting

I';m new to having what could be considered a decent drone so I';m taking it slowly. It';s mainly because I don';t want to go crazy with it and find it does have some kind of issue. With this in mind I';ve only run it out to around 400 meters so far. Some of this is to do with the weather recently but mainly because I';m a bit nervous about letting it get too far away. I';ve seen numerous videos where the range is good out to well over a kilometre. I don';t see any reason to doubt that at this point.

The app is working as shown on all the videos I';ve watched. The drone no longer comes with the "Beginner Mode" locked on either. This means you have access to all the features immediately. I have read just in the last couple of days that there is an update that may cause an issue with the way the 4k is recorded. I don';t know for sure if it';s a problem as I haven';t had that update yet.  The good news is that the updates don';t seem to be mandatory and I may hold off on it until I hear other reports.

For me, the cost/feature ratio was just too good to ignore. Will it be too good to be true? Time will tell, but so far so good.

Starting to think this could be a viable alternative to a P3s, might revisit this in the new year

Have you watched AndyRC review on the Xiaomi, he gives it some good feedback  ~~ I was looking at them around the time of when I bought my P3s,(and many many others)  and I fell for the Dji trap instead, only due to the name and reputation.
What';s making you want rid of the phantom ?
 ;)

Some fair points apollo7  ~~
DJI really try to dominate and dictate how and what you do with there products.
Stress cracks =  :thumbdown:
Lipo price =  :thumbdown:
Updates =  :thumbdown:
Apple =  :thumbdown:

Luckily I';ve no stress cracks, that';s a big production fault on dji';s part and has probably cost them a lot of sales global, I';m constantly reading reports of it on other sites.
I';ve only bought one spare lipo for my P3s,,,,, day light robbery ! Suppose 2 packs is enough for me, giving over 30mins stick time.
One thing I don';t do is update, it flys perfect already,  and as I don';t have any of the huge price tag apple devices it doesn';t affect me. I';m using a cheap large screen android phone, with the ';Litchi app'; so I never get any annoying update messages that you will be bombarded with using DJI go.

I would back the motor screws of a tiny tiny bit as dji fit them too tight, im sure this is the cause of the cracks, but only do this so the end of the alen key moves a couple of mm

Still waiting on delivery of the Mi drone, rather excited at getting it, if all the forum hype is to be believed then it could turn out to be a total phantom killer, i have set up my old mobile phone to be a dedicated screen, and once i have had a few flights if i am happy i will invest in a second lipo, will post a bit of an unboxing when it turns up

I've ordered a Mi rone 4K - this is a replacement for the £900 DJI Phantom 2 Vision + that is no longer supported by the manufacturers.
