Is the MPNG 2.9 worth to upgrade from 2.8R3 yet?

So the question is set....:
Is the MPNG 2.9 worth to upgrade from 2.8R3 yet?

I';m at tuning the PIDs, etc...so if it';s worth to upgrade I will make that step, instead of finishing the setup with the 2.8R3...

Cheers,
B

firey1

2.9.1 is still in beta phase but in saying that I have been running this for over a month
It is a great improvement over 2.8 yes but depends if you want to risk running a beta on your quad

Thanks for your reply mate, if you had seen us this afternoon "flying" my quad (tuning PIDs - no success), you wouldn';t have mentioned the risk of the beta...

firey1

no worries at all if you want to try it i have posted how to use svn to download
http://www.multi-rotor.co.uk/index.php?topic=1835.0

there are a few things needed changing tho
ppm is enabled have to disable
transmitter is set to standard ( mode 1 ) i fly mwi (mode 2 )
and gps is set as UBLOX so depends what you have

Yup, just found it... your thread, so I will watch that movie tomorrow...

So just a quick checklist:
1 need to disable the PPM
2 change the transmiter from standard to mode 2
3 GPS:
I have this GPS: http://www.hobbyking.com/hobbyking/store/__31135__NEO_6M_GPS_Module.html
Do I need to change anything related to it?

Should I change the ESC speedrate from 490Hz to 400Hz? I have the cheap Hobby King SS ESC 25-30A.

Many thanks,
B.

firey1

Transmitter change to mwi well thats what i use
not sure on the esc as i run a quttro esc
as for the gps
that one is a ublox gps
but the baud rate will be different unless you have changed setting

you may require to configure this module for use with your flight controller (MultiWii Copter I2C GPS board requires 115200 baud). You will require a USB to FTDI adaptor board to do this.
Please note that this module ships with defualt settings and a buad rate of 38400.
there is another way you can make it work without having to flash the gps unit

in the config h file you could change the baud rate to suit your gps buad rate
towards the bottom of the config h file you will see a list of 3 baud rates
first is your connection like to mission planner
next is your gps baud rate
third is mavlink baud rate

this is an easy way to check on changes made when an update happens

https://code.google.com/p/megapirateng/source/diff?spec=svn300&r=300&format=side&path=/beta/2.9.1/ArduCopter/APM_Config.h

and just looking at that i see that the baud for gps is already set for 38400 on 2.9.1 so you wont need to change anything for the gps unit to work

Also another thing to check is the board version
r300 has crius board V2 just change that to V1 if you need to as there ia a bit of difference in boards

Just came back from the field, wanted to tune the PIDs...no success...it was the same as yesterday: launched as a rocket, and felt like totally no control at all...tried with acro due wanted to start with the ACRO PIDs...

Only touched the throttle and at around 5% just was on the ground etc..and when moved to around 20% it wanted to reach the moon...and made a flip at around 8m height...I cut the throttle of coz when realized that the aliens has captured my AIOP... ;)

Before flight I did:

1. fresh 2.9 install with the mentioned modifications (PPM disable, radio to MWI
2. radio calibration, went fine
3. accelero calibration
4. ESC calibration

tested the throttle without props and I have felt I control them.

Checked the motor channels in the failsafe page and Im not sure what should be the right sequences...I mean the first should be the front left? etc... ?

Now checked the config file and I have found that the throttle acceleration was set to enable by default...so it could cause my problem?

But at least the GPS was locked... ;) and at least I could fly with my J Perkins Twister V949 toyquad...

any ideas?

the hardware:

F330 frame
9045 triblade props (they just fit to the frame...)
SK3 2836 1130kv motors 180W
Hobb King SS ESC 25-30A ESC
3S Nanotech 45-90C Lipo
Crius AIOP V2

Software: MPNG 2.9R300 (aka 2.9.1)

Mate, I have AIOP V2, why I shouldn';t set the

SERIAL_PPM_ENABLED_PL1      // Use for CRIUS AIOP Pro v2

?

Cheers,
B

firey1

I could be wrong on changing for your board
but on my V1.1 board with this enabled i had no transmitter inputs when flashed and had to disable to get the transmitter inputs to work

thanks for your quick response, so with my AIOP V2 I could try the "SERIAL_PPM_ENABLED_PL1      // Use for CRIUS AIOP Pro v2" ?

could it cause the "out of control crazy rocket" syndrome?

cheerz,
b

firey1

it may well cause it im not sure
but what i have heard in the past is that when it launches like that is it possible you have flight mode set for anything other than acro or stabilize as it sounds like it trying to climb to a pre determined height

I was trying in ACRO mode, tried to set up the PIDs...but beside the rocketlauncher, I have felt totally out of control...it did flips, etc right after the take off...and I have touched only the throttle...the PIDs were default.

It was exactly the same as yesterday with the MPNG 2.8...

"Huston, we have a problem here" ... ;)

firey1

it almost sounds like your motor sequence is wrong
have you checked the manual and pin layout for motor connections
just trying to think of all possible problems for you

firey1

sorry got me beat then why its flipping and uncontrollable if the motors and props are correct
you could try sending a message to jumpy07 on here he knows alot more on the V2 board

As others have said... check motor directions, prop directions and motor mapping..  anything flipping on take off is one of these.
Also check that pitch (right stick up and done, mode 2),  is right way round in Mission Planner.. normally you have to reverse this channel for a Multi (Mission Planner is also used for Arduplane and channel is other way on planes)

bulesz

Thanks guys for the help, I will "redoublecheck" my settings regarding to the readme.txt of the MPNG.

The motor directions seemed to be right. Reversing the pitch should be done on the radio (reverse channel) or in the Mission Planner somehow... ?

At the radio calibration screen the stick movement showed the exceptional way in the indicator...

Thanks again,
B

firey1

hey there  i know you have checked and double checked but just incase your working from wrong layout here is some pics

the numbers on the quad pics relate to the motor pins on the crius board
just trying to help

Thanks for the pics!! These are very helpful when I will do the checking!

Many thanks for the help, but I think I have found what did cause my main problem!

I have this cheap SS ESC:
http://www.hobbyking.com/hobbyking/store/__6460__Hobbyking_SS_Series_25_30A_ESC.html

It is not programmable, so I can';t set the timing, only the throttle distance. And it couldn';t manage the throttle as smooth as it should be... ??????

But then how could use the other guys with their multirotors with success???

peter_a

only a couple of days now before I`m in the same position.
Thanks for the diagrams , it least I know I`ve got that right , before I tried getting the pins out from the arducopter web site for my AIO v 2 ... BAD idea !!!! , the pin outs are different.

firey1

no worries when i first put my quad together i was following the wrong diagram and ended up flipping over when i tried to launch then found the right manual thanks to Jumpy07 and gazza

Also for the V2 board there is a difference in the transmitter pin layout as the first 3 pins are PPM
the version 1 board does not have this so might pay to check out your transmitter pin layout as well

This maybe your problem if you have throttle plugged into the ppm pins i just dont know much about that side of it
