thats only the skeleton frame, need to test stuff before adding the main covers, legs etc etc
Looks quite cool though. Mind you I always like orange and black colour schemes  ::)

just playing with ideas for now but Im thinking of going with this for the covers....

hex printed cover with a .5mm real CF twill weave backing.

should be nice and durable while still looking the dogs nads ::)

ps that isnt the finished printed part, just a failed print Im using to check measurements

only the two bottom covers to do now and I can concentrate on a gimbal setup and maybe retracts (depending on the weight it'll possibly add)

so basic break down of hardware.....

might swap out a few bits and pieces after a couple of long flights (motors most likely), but generally its more or less the original H-copter in a new lighter more durable frock.

think Ill go for a aio cam for fpv so I can fit it on a removable fc pitch stabilised gimbal up front, doesnt need to be fancy as it'll just be for navigation and this is by no means a high speed flip machine .

as for the capture cam Ive been playing with a idea thats looking to be remarkable workable :hmm:

ordered in a dash cam for the missus first motor a while back and it came with all the usual claims "1080HD, 30fps, blah blah blah", didnt really care aslong as it produced a decent enough image that'd satisfy any insurance claim and had a image good enough to pick out a license plate at a fair range....

As it turned out, the bloody thing was way above my expectations, crackin image quality (even puts my action cam to shame annoyingly), copes with light changes really well and even produces good results in low light nighttime conditions, records great sound quality, wifi enabled (bloody good range on it too), an anti shake/vibe fucntion thats ACTUALY works, inbuilt lipo with 1hr record time, can be powered via external 5v (so it'll happily run off a ubec ~~)

so naturally....

I bought another that I'll rework into a gimbal...

missus was a little mystified as to why she needed two dashcams but I carefully avoided elaborating on the reason for the second purchase :whistling:

either way, if it works it'll be a bonus, if not Ill just fall back on my action cam again.

fc stabilized cam setup printed, mounted, tested....

was gonna go with the entire pitch and roll setup but servo based gimbals get pretty bulky when using both axis and tbh I only really need Pitch stabilisation on a cam birds fpv cam.

slightly revised one of the lower covers to accommodate a simple 3s battery alarm (something I generally do on all my frame designs, I just like having that little bit of LOS visual indication for peace of mind (obviously you can use it to monitor higher cell batteriies but it can only watch three of the cells, still better than nothing though)...

now I just need to fit nav/status lights, figure white up front on the arms and red down the back, keyed to flash when motors disarmed and steady on when armed.

then a couple of indicator leds in the lower plate to indicate 2D and 3D sat lock and one other to indicate mode status/mission status.

still need to do the final motor wiring but waiting on some gold male 3m bullet connectors (yes I could direct solder but I like having the option of quick swap outs)

gave it some removable lanky legs so it can accommodate a go-pro slung under or..... the previously mentioned dashcam Ive been wanting to try.

I either leave it as is with maybe a shim to increase its downwards angle a bit more or design a new case for it.

either way I cant knock the image quality it puts out, even on 720 in low light it was pretty clear

the auto focus was struggling a bit as our bengal decided to get in on the action while I was testing the video capture quality, on 1080 setting its a lovely crisp image and even at 30fps its nice and smooth, look forward to seeing how it copes in the air.

85g

got both mine from BG I think.... though they can be found on Egay iirc

my ActionCam weighs in at 66g so Its slightly heavier at +19g but on a heavy lifter like my H-copter it wont even notice it, if Im really anal retentive and recase is in a minimalistic design Im sure I could probably get it down to the 66g mark too but right now I just cant see the point.

well dam....

initial motor testing seemed to go flawlessly.

re-calibrated all the escs (pretty sure I kept them paired with thier motors when they came off the other frame so it should have been a case of slapping them straight on the new frame) but better safe than sorry

re-checked motor directions.... all good

checked props

checked arming sequence

etc

etc etc

basically everything seemed good

so I got cocky :embarrassed

rather than pinning it down and checking everything as I throttled it up I just went for it..........

and at this point I discovered I done the most rookie thing I ever done.... even when I was a rookie.

Id randomly plugged the escs in without any care of motor order whatsoever..... I recall intending to sort it out before maiden flight..... but cockiness also leads to blind ignorance and a not to small degree of stupidity,

my punishment....

the instant I throttled her up she spazzed out, flipped immediately onto her back and chipped the crap out of a brand new set of CF 1040's :banghead: :banghead: :banghead:

Woops. An easy mistake to make. I think the latest version of BetaFlight actually has logic to prevent the flip!! Something in the code trying to stop quads going loopy when they are tested, mainly for noobs but we all make mistakes.

Hope the damage isn't too bad and you can try again once wiring changed.

Just checked and its called 'Runaway Takeoff Prevention' or anti-taz as in Tasmanian Devil. Details here: https://github.com/betaflight/betaflight/pull/4935

It's in BF 3.3.0 or newer.

Sorry not trying to make you feel bad.
I have made so many mistakes it's untrue. Silly stupid ones like using blue tac to hold an XT60 to solder wires to then realising blue tac melts into the pins of the XT60 and takes ages to remove!!
Only remembering to put heat shrink on After soldering both ends of cable.
Forgetting to take lens cap off then wondering why I can't see anything in goggles!
Breaking props to find all the spares I brought are clockwise and I broke an anti clockwise one!!!!
Forgetting to put the gps puck in the up position and spending ages working out why I can't get a decent number of sats.
Wondering why the quad wont stay flying forwards when I let go of sticks, only to remember that I was not in rate mode.

I could go on for hours!!!!

motors reconfigured.

wiring triple checked..... then nervously checked a couple more times

props chipped but still flight capable (Im not changing them for new until Im sure Ive not screwed up this time)

re-flashed apm to make sure its DEFINITELY the right config.

ran through entire accel, compass, level calibration even though Im sure it was right.

basically spent most last night re-doing my work then triple checking it all like an ocd obsessed loon.

just waiting on lipo's to finish charging and Ill take her out back for a short maiden hover and aslong as that go's right Ill also check altitude hold (barometer) and loiter (gps) to make sure their working also.

Im not expecting her to fly as smooth as the original did straight off the bat now that all the PIDs and tweeks have been wiped from the APM but with the basic tweeks I did last night she should atleast lift fine and hover stable :crossfingers:

well.......

maiden was........ interesting :hmm:

visited a bush

visited a tree canopy

visited a grass bank

and sometimes..... even visited the air!

but, she did fly.... though if Im completely honest, not as good as I hoped for.

I think somethings off or on its way out in either the motors or esc.  Im getting small surges through one of the motors which is throwing everything out so I might have to swap the lot out for peace of mind. :-/

not the best quality video (seems my action cams also dying as it wouldnt auto adjust the image atall and its focus & expo seems to be jammed in low light settings, time for a newun of that too then :whistling:)...

you can actually hear the surge I mentioned every now and again in that vid, its the little chirping noise that occurs just before it looses a little stability.... cant be having that on a cam ship.

<sigh>

seems more and more likely its a esc issue.

initial maiden was done using a 4s 60-70c

just ran it up on a 3s 50c and though the surge didnt entirely vanish it did massively reduce and no longer directly effected stability, it also occurred to me that I ran the original h-copter (with all the same hardware) exclusively on my chunkier 3s lipos and it didnt suffer the same symptoms, Im guessing that suddenly throwing a 4s at the escs has highlighted/prompted the surge issue :banghead:

Oh well..... she flies now like I wanted her to in her first maiden when I use 3s so Ill just see if a bit of tweeking will clear up the most of the issue, If not Ill swap the 4x esc for a lighter 4in1 at the same time I change the motors ::)

I can't have sound on at moment but I assume it's not a PID issue?
i.e. when you have 4S the motors have more torque available so can respond faster to the 'demand' for change of speed signals. So maybe going to 3S masks the issue a little?
Anyway you have probably thought of PIDs and eliminated that.

Might be good to just change motors or esc and see which is failing so you don't use them on a future build?

definetly not PIDs, spent a fair time tweeking them up and down and varying combo's, from a really sluggish timid setup all the way to almost my project sparkie insanely almost uncontrollably responsive setup, just doesnt eliminate the surging on 4s and only removes it on 3s.

tbf to the escs theyve seen a minim of a hundred hours in the air over the last 3yrs so theyre probably at their age limit anyway :cry

I did think with all your build experience you would have tried PIDs.
100hrs is good I would say. I guess lots of people just change esc as their are newer ones and they 'might make me fly better'  ::)

yep.....

Im giving up on trying to tune it out.

spent the whole morning reworking the PID's and only getting minor improvements.

think Ill have to call it a day messing with the PID's cos I just cant see me getting positive results, time to bite the bullet and just swap em out <sigh>.

suppose if everything just went right straight off the design board it just wouldnt be multirotor'ing

replaced the esc's

did some redesign work on the fc bay to better accommodate wire management and give the fc more vibe dampening (just incase I was suffering vibe effects....though I doubt it )

redid all the wiring to make sure none of the wire bundles contained any damaged wires or possible signal/interference weak points.

put her back together

waited for a break in the rain and legged it outside to run a battery through her.

only got 15mins of flight time out of it (started to rain again and I was only doing minor test manoeuvres) BUT the surging seems to have dissappeared, obviously I need to throw a few more battery cycles through her to be sure and get her into some nice open space to chuck her about a bit but it seems promising.

Im still not convinced the problem was the escs entirely and the newer escs might just be compensating for the actual issue being a motor but Im still set on changing them out for something even more efficient anyway so that wont be a complete loss either.

can you actually break an APM...

I often wondered if short of smacking crap out of it with a hammer, what will actually kill one

Ive gone through atleast 50 various fc's in god knows how many different frames in the 3-4 years that APM has kept my 550 in the air and its the only fc thats never let me down

after killing the electronics in my current project sparkie I decided to start somewhat from scratch, I re-visited the main body design and did a little more fettling to increase internal space but also add a bit more rigidity (not that it needed it but best safe to be sorry considering Im hoping to throw some silly over spec'ed parts at this one)

the only problem Im facing at this moment however is what colours to go with?

maybe go all black for that solid stealth appeal?.... might be a bit boring looking though

suppose I could stick with the transparent blue which I actually still quite like.

but

then there's so many other options!?!?!

transparent green, yellow, red or even white?

then there's always solid non-transparent colours which would make things really difficult to decide on, aaaagh to many choices! :banghead:

twas gonna be one of my rare days were I just purely go and fly and not tinker atall... figured I needed a break from sore fingers, solder burns, wires and carbon fibre.

headed out with my most trusted trouble free quad in hand, my twinboard250, fully intending to just entertain myself by thoroughly draining a large bag of fully charged lipo's

think I was on my 4-5th battery when I decided to take myself on a little adventure into the woods surrounding my flight field and to add excitement to fun I decide to do it a full tilt..... went well for about 50ft..... then I hit a tree still going at full whack.

to its benefit the twinboard came away pretty well with only a damaged motor mount and a twanged blade but it put an end to my fun time as I also not bothered bringing a second quad with me.

inevitably while doing the repairs I started tinkering with other frames too and rebuilt my Reaper back upto flight ready condition aswell as the twinboard (albeit slightly mismatching)

think Ill try and get some time back at the feild tomorrow to finish off my bag of batteries ::)

oh I almost forgot, the beast is back in top form...

need to get some large'ish packs to really get the most out of her flight time wise but she happily trundled about the air for 15-20mins on a pair of my newest 2200 turnigy's twinned together, gps and baro are working like a charm so I dont foresee any issue's with chucking a mission at her when I get a chance too, add to that Im thinking of chucking in some sonar and optical flow just to give her as much in the way of eyes and ears as possible.... that and I just want an excuse to make new bits for her :whistling:
