Hubsan X4 or Twister

Hi, I';m new here & new to RC.
Well I had an electric RC car when I was a little kiddy which I used to race every Sunday, I was never any good, never won anything but didnt come last either, the car wasnt brilliant either but I thoroughly enjoyed it, I could get around the track, until 1 day it ended up in the water & that was the end of that!

I';ve had a bit of a go in a real helicopter, & a bit of a go in a real plane, but I';m not a pilot.

A few years ago a mate bought us all 1 of these each but they was pretty rubbish, could barely get off the ground, & was pretty uncontrollable especially once they got a wobble on.

I';ve always fancied a quadcopter, but nowadays I';m poor, even the cheapest are not really in my budget. But I recently saw a vid of a quadcopter going over my house
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xT0ktHz6uFs
& then I saw this.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-722hmTeAOc

Well I can stretch to £35 from my local RC shop (for the Hubsan X4), possibly a bit more (but not much more).

Anyway after doing a bunch of reading I reckon I';m going to get one. But the Twister also caught my eye. I would eventually like to put a camera on, even if it means doing a bit of soldering (which I dont ever remember doing before but I must have done cuz I have a soldering iron!), but I';d rather buy a bit of kit ready made.

Now I';ve seen this, which I understand is the same Qcopter with a camera as well
http://www.directsource4u.co.uk/hbn-technologies/hubsan-fpv-x4
But I';ve read enough about that company to know I';m not going to use them.

I also asked in the local RC shop about it, they havent heard of that for the Hubsan X4 (said it wont work with it) but have said they will ask the rep. They do have the same controller for a plane with a camera (I think called Spyhawk)

So far everything is pointing to the X4 especially if that camera set-up I linked is available, but obviously I';m going to be crashing & breaking things.

I';m wondering which will be less likely to break, the Twister or the X4? & which is going to be easier to repair, & be cheapest to run in terms of buying spares. & which will be easier to fly & have fun with, but with enough practise I guess that is less of an issue.

I realise it';s only going to be outdoor on a very calm day, I realise the Hubsan can only use it';s own controller (TX, what does TX stand for?), & it';s highly unlikely that I';ll be progressing on to lots of other different bits of kit/models etc.

My budget is very tight, I cant justify any of it, but I want I want I want!

So any advice/help please would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks.

bigbelly

TX stands for transmitter.

FPV requires a lot of technology, but if you just want to keep things simple, you can add an "808" type keyring camera to the hubsan which I believe a few people have had success with.

The 808 keyring cam number 11 appears to be a pretty good little video camera from ebay and should cost about £20 I think.

This chap sells a variety of the 808 type cameras and is a highly regarded trader of these particular cameras.

hi   the X4 are great little flyers both my wife and 14y daughter learnt to fly with the X4.
they fly inside the house and outside ,due to 2.4ghz radio .

for the money I cant see how you could do better

Gaza07

Welcome to the forum Ssscrudddy I think the X4 will take some beating at the price and it is a very stable little copter, but it is very small so you not going to be going to high or to far away from your self untill it becomes a small dot, the twister I think is quite a bit bigger  ~~

Hi, welcome to the forum; a lot depends on what you want from it, I';ve had both and from what you say I think probably the Twister is the best one to go for. I fly mine indoors and outdoors and it does both well, but I would say better outdoors than the x4 - it';s a lot easier to follow especially at night with the leds on!
If you do get the Twister don';t buy their batteries, Hobby King UK do one that';s good for £1.75 each - I got 6 and including postage it was still cheaper than 2 Twister ones!
Good luck looking forward to see more posts from you as you progress.

Ssscrudddy

Thanks for the advice peep. Looks like it';s going to be the Twister then, & a keychain cam. I just hope I can find a cam that doesnt get affected by vibrations too much. I once had an expensive ';sports cam'; about 6 years ago sold by a motorbike shop, but it was so badly affected by vibrations (I had a Buell which vibrates a lot) that I had to get my money back on it. Turns out everyone else who bought 1 returned them as well.

I';ve been looking at these cams, & it would seem the 808 #16 is better, & apparently weighs 17g.
I was wondering will the Twister be able to carry this weight, especially with the 600mAh battery fitted?

I';ve just had the same camera and in the process of seeing how to fit it on mine; don';t forget you need a class 4 micro sd card for the camera, has to be class 4 for it to work.
Another worthwhile thing to do is ditch the cr4p flimsy canopies they give you and put an Aerosol top of a suitable size on instead - Have a look at my thread "Twister bling" for a idea of what';s needed. It saved my Twister from damage to the FC board when a tree jumped out in front of it  :whistling:
Any advice you want / need - ask!

Hehe, I saw that, that';s a hefty chunk. I bet you';re glad you had that lid on it that you used.

Sure was, it would have been bin liner job for sure! I';ve now found something even better, it';s the lid that holds the spices on the Aldi curries (the ones with the dry spices in the lid) make a couple of keyhole slots in that correspond to the legs of the frame with a soldering iron and pop it on - works a treat, will post when I';ve got time.

OK, pic of latest canopy as promised:

Nice one looks very good  ~~
Quite pleased with it really, the double ridge makes it stronger so less prone to damage like it was before,  more of a bonus because we like the Aldi curries as well.

Ssscrudddy

Well I';ve done it. I';ve ordered the Twister quad. £45 from my local RC shop, Tooleys RC in Northampton.
Apparently I left it a bit late to get it in time for the weekend. They dont carry it in stock.
I dont get paid until Friday, & I assumed I would have to pay up front. Anyway I went in to ask if they was getting it from another shop or buying from a supplier, with a view to getting the ball rolling (if it was coming from another shop). Well they have to get it from a supplier, they didnt want paying up front, & if I had gone in earlier in the day it would have been here (in the shop) by Friday. It';s still possible it might be Friday, but unlikely, this might be a good thing seeing as I have my daughter staying with me this weekend. She definitely would want a go on it, as will I...
This is the reply I had from them on Faceachebook "They are £44.99 , about 2 days to get in , we will open and test fly with you to make sure all good"

Just gotta wait now, I hate waiting...

Ssscrudddy

Well today';s the day my Twister quad should arrive.
Weather forecast 15-20 mph winds, & rain  :blink

Don';t worry about the weather,  have a go indoors on low rate. Make sure you cover the TV screen with a sheet or something, don';t ask me why  ::)  ::)  ::)

Ssscrudddy

Lol. I should be ok actually, I live in quite a big house, & the court yard might be usable as well as long as it isnt raining.

Same vid I posted in post no1, someone elses vid showing where I live.

Ssscrudddy

lol, that place is called Delapre Abbey, & my name is Deane, so I';m Deane of the Abbey.
I';m there for security for the building, to stop it getting vandalised & broken into.
I think when I get my camera I';m gonna do a video guided tour of the place from my Twister.

Ssscrudddy

Yay I got it. The guy in the shop made it look so easy, I';m all over the place!
& it really doesnt help that I havent got any new AA batteries for the TX. I raided some devices, but I';ve only got 1 bar of battery power on the TX, & no money ';til Friday to buy some new batteries. I wish the TX used 18650s cuz I got loads of them.

guest325

Main thing to remember is small stick movement means small response,  be gentle with it and it won';t bite - to start with just try to get a stable hover and move forward and backward gently,  then try side to side once you';ve got that try turning and fly a square box (slowly) and get used to what happens when it';s coming towards you. Once you can do this you can then try to speed up a bit,  get plenty of batteries so you can get a reasonable flight time - don';t forget,  Hobbyking UK 1S 600 mah Turnigy nanotecs @ £1.75 each
http://www.hobbyking.com/hobbyking/store/__34871__Turnigy_nano_tech_600mah_1S_35_70C_Lipo_Pack_Fits_Nine_Eagles_Solo_Pro_328_Eflite_MQX_120SR_UK_.html
I got 6 when I got mine - £3.50 P/P so get enough to make it worth it!
Good luck with it
D

Ssscrudddy

Well I have it. Lots of practise needed. Here is my 3rd go with it, at this point I had already crashed it into a bucket of water that was laying around after cleaning out a fish tank. It still works even after the crash you see here. I';m getting better.
Twister quadcopter 3rd flight

I';m going to order 6 spare batteries tomorrow (that where linked earlier). But I also want a battery charger to be able to charge multiple batteries, I see the Imax B6 keep getting mentioned, but I want something I can plug into the mains, I get the impression that this cahrger doesnt plug into the mains, so any ideas please.

guest325

Be careful about multi-charging 1S batteries, if they are not all depleted by the same amount you could have a potential over-charge possibility which could result in magic smoke!!!
Possibly a better idea would be to get another charger so you can charge 2 at a time, someone may disagree with me but I speak from experience.
You';re not doing too bad, just relax and don';t try too hard - oh btw I would cover that TV with a sheet or something - ask me how I know  ::)
Try to get into a hover about waist height and hold it there to get the feel of what your inputs need to be, any lower and you';re in prop-wash; also avoid getting too close to the ceiling - you get sucked up to it (you';ve probably already found that out!).
Good luck - hope to see some more vid';s soon.

Well I';ve now ordered some of those nano tech batteries, unfortunately they only had 3 in stock. Had to wait for payday, they had loads the other day. I';ve also ordered a V2 808 # 16 cam with the D fish eye lens (120 degree).

I think I';ll go to my local RC shop & get another charger from them & 1 of their batteries too, having looked at ';multiple battery'; chargers it would seem I';ll have to put up with just charging 1 at a time (hence going for a 2nd charger). I doubt I';ll be going to any ';in the field'; events either indoor or outdoor stuff, & seeing as I live in the middle of a public park anyway, the nearest field is right outside my door, so no actual need for 1 of those expensive fancy chargers!

Hoping for a nice calm day now, it looks pretty calm atm, so I reckon I might try it without the canopy on, but I realise it';s probably not calm enough yet. Apparently it';s doing 11 mph.

The next you hear from me hopefully I';ll be able to fly it & have a bit of video worth seeing!

Thanks for all the help & attention peeps.

Edit. So much for not hearing from me again! Just had my 1st go outside, it was awesome. Virtually no wind. Simply not worrying about crashing into anything cuz there';s nothing to crash into was good enough.
I ended up putting it on 60%, I was whizzing about doing banked turns & stuff, flying all over the place.
I was under the impression that it would self level & stop after going forward & then you let go of the stick, but I found that it would take way too long to do that depending on how fast I was going, so pretty soon got the knack of stopping it myself.
At one point I had to race someones dog to the quad when I crashed, I only just beat the dog! I also had to go hunting for the battery! I think I';ll put a bit of velcro on it for next time.
Oh I wish I had more batteries, I gotta wait an hour now :( still I have 3 on order, that';s all they had, I was gonna order 6.
At least I live in the park, so it';s not exactly far for me to go & charge up again.
Why didnt I get 1 of these sooner!

Flyinegypt

Oops! I think it might have been me who purchased 4 spares for mine the other week. Must have depleted their stocks.

Regarding the multi charger, check this one http://www.wheelspinmodels.co.uk/i/58392/

I visited some friends who were indoor flying this afternoon and several were using them for their Ladybird clones and other small heli';s.
