New 808 #18 HD Camera

There is a new 808 #18 HD Camera available on ebay and likely elsewhere. It's very similar to the 808 #16 that i used to own. The main difference is that it comes with AV out - which means it could be used for FPV work (i think).

I've just received mine. I've also ordered a cheapo gel based 'fish eye' lens (sold to be stuck over mobile phone cameras for novelty picture taking purposes - probably not the best quality) to try and fit to the thing to improve the field of view (type 'fish eye mobile phone' into ebays search).

The rcgroups thread has links to a lot of info and various software downloads and alternative firmwares etc.

I intend to use mine for general video recording work on my quadcopter where i want to record some video but don't want the expense or weight of a proper decent SLR camera and also when the fish eye lens arrives (and if i ever get my miniquadcopter off the ground) i might try using it for mini FPV flying.

Ive never had one of these key chain cams but I might after Ive seen the results from your they do look to be quite good, I see they have already started flashing the firmware on them it looks like if its flashable it will be flashed theses days

From what Ive read we will soon be flashing silabs base esc's to  ~~

I've just done a quick test flight indoors as it's raining outside. I've got my new camera and I've fixed the quadcopter arms back to 90 degrees to solve the yawing problem (i hope) but i can't go out and play

I mounted the camera on top of the quadcopter using velcro stuck to a layer of double sided foam gyro tape (the velcro is sow on stuff so i use the foam with it as a matter of course now to make it stick) and then a layer of the gel i bought for my sensors. The video is significantly smoother than any I've recorded before but how much that's down to the vibration gel and how much down to the new quadcopter with smaller props I'm not sure (until i get around to trying it out on the larger one).

I've uploaded the video to youtube without editing it or compressing it to give as close to the original quality as possible;

That looks pretty good quality and vibe free to by the look of it, I bet it will be even better out side in daylight, I think your quad wants to go out to play  just for a second it looked like you were going to fly towards the window

I was tempted to fly around the room a bit as well as that would look quite cool on camera but I'd not make myself popular if i crashed and damaged something (apart from the quad i mean). I need to get my mini quadcopter flying for this really.

The quality should be better outside in daylight and i am quite impressed with it already but it's no GoPro. It only cost me £22.50 though.

I'm trying to convince my friend to get one to stick on his dog though.

Big smile at the end you must be pleased with that it looks good  and no vibes ~~
and your aerobatics seem to have come on a lot to, your flips seem much quicker and the rolls look instant, it doesn't look like your loosing much height if any at all in the rolls, how far back do you throttle when rolling

I throttle back roughly a third to a half and use full stick deflection. Also sometimes on the forward flips i make sure I'm moving upwards quickly enough as i go into the flip that coming out i can still be traveling upwards.

Although on some of the flips i do i throttle back almost fully and let momentum carry me around the upside down bit.

I'm still experimenting with the best method to use.

I've put my Roll/Pitch and Yaw RATE up to 0.74 as well.

I'm really going to have to nip down my local field and give this a try, Ive been putting it of and I dont know why because Ive rolled much more expensive models in the past  ;)
I just watched your video a couple of times full screen and I think your getting the odd vibes at high throttle nothing to worry about though, also same as most cams avoid the bright light of the sky as it darkens things down but all cams do that, I have to say though I'm impressed and at that price and size its probably unbeatable  ~~

Thanks for the tips  ~~

Pick one of your lighter models to try it with as i suspect it will make things easier. Perhaps not your favorite model either.

When going in to the roll or flip it's important not to throttle down too soon, otherwise you never gain enough rotation speed. If you try to be too careful with the throttle you can end up making things more difficult for yourself.

I have done a few flips where I've not throttled down at all - you can make more of a swooping maneuver if you pull it off right but you will lose a lot more height so have to make sure you've got enough to start with.

Nice video yes and a nice cheesy grin at the end.  I am still not sure but does that camera have a live AV out and have you tried it out at all?

cheers
