Compass issue

 :help: Hi Guys,
I';m very new to the multi-copter scene, and don';t understand the way my compass affects the orientation of the heli.
So, I got me a bit of a problem - RM550 frame Hex, Crius IOP, MegapirateNG, Arduino, Crius V2 GPS.
From switch on and arming, all is well until I begin to yaw the hex around to face me. The hex comes round ok, but responds to cyclic stick as if it is still facing away from me. I find this most disconcerting since I am still struggling with nose -in hovering with the other choppers in the fleet. I really want the hex to behave like my other choppers etc in this respect.
Since I lost my fear of electronics along with valve sets, I went headlong into the setups, firmware, downloading files generally having a bad time. Wound up with something that refused to talk to anything I had.
I messed it up real bad, but fortunately found the way back to sanity on the forum here. EXCELLENT JOB ! But having reinstated the hex to talk, arm up and blow the fans around again it still has the same compass anomaly as before.
So the bottom line is: Can anyone help me alter the settings to change this feature?
Happy landings -
Ian

In the planner mode selection screen do you have simple mode ticked because that is exactly what simple mode does it makes the copter react as if its tail in when pointing in any direction, un-tick simple mode and you should be fine  ~~

Hi Gaza07,
flight planner showed none of the ';simple'; boxes ticked. I';ll try changing and saving - see what happens. Back in 10 mins.

Well give me a good smack on the head  -  the problem, if indeed it was a problem, now seems to be fixed. Yes, the ';simple'; tickbox is where the answer is.That particular feature didn';t jump out at me from the documentation.
Now a question - does the compass always assume it';s pointing North at switch-on? I';guessing there may be more info in the thousands of pages I';ve not read yet, but I haven';t seen this one.
happy landings,
Ian

The compass should read the correct direction and not assume its pointing north, once the compass is calibrated you can check it with a normal camping compass to make sure its accurate, thing like speakers in your house other other items with magnets in would affect the reading / setting up  ~~

Hi Gaza07,
many thanks for the rapid replies.  Compass always sets up showing to be pointing north. I';ve tried it in a number of orientations, still the same. Checked with camping compass, no change. I did live calibration through Mission planner configuration page, no change......
????? Any other ideas?
Many thanks in advance,
Ian

Depending on the board/software - it can certainly provide a current heading from startup - but some software (Arducopter for example) uses an auto-learning methods which means you need to put some flights in before it gets an accurate read on the heading.
The auto-learn mode is falling a bit out of favour for various reasons - though I don';t have an issue with it. Some people prefer to do the ';autolearn dance'; during config and turning auto-learn off.

btw - Simple mode is worth having on at least one mode. If you lose orientation at distance, you can flip into simple mode and bring it back close enough to fly it normally. Its also worth it if you lose a motor on a hexa or octo as you stand a chance of recovering (though not so relevant on a quad, as lose a motor and you';re going down!).

Thanks to all for all the good info - right now there';s a heap of thoughts churning in my grey matter - all fighting for consideration. I guess it will take a while before it all settles into some semblance of order. But thanks to you all, I';m confident I';m off to a good start!
Happy landings !
