One thing I thought about doing was marking kit (like the Taranis) with a single centre punch mark in a specific location and recording that, E.G. 50mm down and 10 to the right of centre - left side slider. Something that the Police could check for but a casual user would never guess that tiny dent has a purpose.
Obviously you can go all smart water and microdots but for inexpensive stuff a mark or two made and recorded should be enough, photograph everything.

I know that is the last thing you are looking to hear right now but make it hard to get rid of the stuff and the risk-reward balance is changed.
That said it';s probably just an opportunistic tea-leaf but might prompt others to spend a short while recording what they own.
In my time I';ve had three motorcycles stolen, probably should have avoid at least two becasue I assumed I would not happen again and in a "safe" location. I will happen, help the Police by having records.
