GoPro Hero3 Silver - video ripple!

Hi all,

I';ve just started flying my F450 and been viewing the videos. On occasions the video displays a band of rippling traveling up the screen. It';s not chronic but is noticeable. I have seen a similar problem on some others videos.

Question is: Is it camera settings (medium field of view, 1080p 25fps) or is it vibration interfering with the camera?

I will try firming up the camera mounting as it';s direct onto the F450 bottom plate but in the mean time I would appreciate any views on this.

Thanks,
Chris

Sounds like jellow..  very common

Better with 720p with higher fps, prop balancing and some foam or rubber under the GoPro makes a big difference.

Ive brought moongel off amazon and i';ll be using those squiggy ear plugs to dampen vibration  that should get rid of any jellow your seeing on your vids

Thanks guys,

I will have a look through the week at what I can do to firm things up a bit. I hope that prop balance isn';t a problem as I';m running a set of Graupner 10x5';s. I know they are not guaranteed perfect but shouldn';t be bad. I was amazed how quiet it was once off the ground, very pleasant.

Will also try different video settings. Initially went for 25/50fps to fit with television input but as I more usually use PC to view/edit the 30/60fps seems a better option?

Hope for some decent flying weather this weekend.  :beer2:

I have the same, its due to vibration..  I';ve balanced my motors and will be double checking my props..  I';m looking into my gains as well due to working fine all on 100 but since moved up to 130 on each it';s started..  I had to change two props of a pair at the same time I changed the gains DOH! so will try back to 100 to see if ok..

Vin, Sounds like you';ve been caught by the classic "change more than one thing and then decide which caused/cured the problem" situation. I';m always doing it. As far as the gains, the advice I';ve seen says to change them by 10 a time either way until you restore stability or induce instability then back a bit! Will be trying that this weekend myself!

Took the 450 out for a couple of flights today. Had made several mount changes and some gains reductions as well. Seemed a lot more stable apart from always wanting to climb! Slightly stiffer wind at around 13mph but very responsive. Got around 12 mins from the 3S 5000 batteries. Took a risk and tried the RTH with Tx turned off after making sure it wasn';t too high and over soft ground. Perfect return with a dead transmitter by my side!! Took back control before it landed. Fantastic.

Now for the bad news. After the second battery gave a warning I landed and switched off the quad. Then I went to switch off the GoPro. Oops. 24 minutes of flight time and.... forgot to start the recording!! Oh well, not the end of the world.

Lesson to be learned I think! I have changed the button setting so when I turn it on it starts recording!  :whistling:

Had a flight yesterday to test video mounting, seemed a lot more secure but about half way through the flight the recording stopped and restarted with the next file number on it. Odd, no idea on that!

I';ve used a strip of velcro between the battery strap and the top of the camera case to eliminate some of the flexing. Seems to have worked but not happy with the angle on the camera to get rid of props/legs from view.

Maybe next task, gimbal and legs!! :whistling:

Been looking at same today!!! Would be good if legs and gimbal could be removed easily and revert to compact quad with camera on top of bottom plate. Then bolt on when required for quality. Been looking at the ones Quadcopters sell for the F450, look fairly neat! I like the idea of using every possible function of the very clever Naza FC.

Now then, Mr Bank Manager..... :hmm:

I';ve just ordered some short easily attached (or removed) legs for my 450 with a gopro gimbal that sits nicely underneath. They';re from some guy I think in Sweden who prints them on his 3dprinter. The whole lot cost me 40 dollars. Which worded out at 27 quid. I';ve not received them yet but he has a YouTube channel demonstrating them in action including the fitting etc. I';ll post a link to it in a min. On my phone on tapa talk so not the easiest task.......

Have a look at this.....

He';s ran out of black medium and said it would be a couple of weeks before he has more but he has about 8 other colours. I went for red to match 2 of my flame wheel legs. :-)

Seem to be getting somewhere.

Now got legs and small gimbal for the GoPro. Initial results were not much better than the direct mount as far as jello went. So, what have I done.   :hmm:

Legs are mounted on small rubber isolation rubbers with M3 threads. Small rubber washers between nut heads and frame and the GoPro is on a couple of moongel pads! Wind dropped today so took it for a test, results looked really smooth although I still need to refine the servo rates on the roll/tilt to get a bit better response. My reasoning for this combination was to mix several different materials with different properties to absorb the vibrations. So far so good.

Managed to break two props on the last landing as the quad drifted in the wind at the last moment and caught a wire fence. Ho hum.
