Building CBQ330H FPV QuadCopter

Raf

It';s a build log of my CBQ330H prototype frame. All improvements applied to the frame will be posted on original thread http://www.multi-rotor.co.uk/index.php?topic=13354.0

Build has began. I have layed out all the bits and bobs. I think couple things are missing - Vtx pigtail for sure.
Idea behind this build as it';s basically testing platform is to be able to pair it up with couple different controllers.
The main part is the dirty section holding ESC';s, PDB. Used ESC';s are Afro Opto 30A flashed with BlHeli - this aloud me to reprogram ESC';s easily to suit application.
Clean section can be easily detached unplugging ESC wires, UBEC and Power supply for FPV System.

Main Spec:
Tiger MN2206-13 2000kv motors
6x4.5 HQ Props
Afro Opto 30A ESC';s - BlHeli DYS SN20A BlHeli - OneShot
AbuseMark PDB
3A Emax Ubec
Some Blue and Red LED';s
D4R-II Receiver
ImmersionRC 600mW VTx
HS1177 600tvl Flight camera
MinimOSD with MWOSD for Naze32
MinimOSD for APM
Simple OSD for other FC';s

First FC to be used is Naze32 (I could not resist). I also planing to try APM and Dji NazaV2.

I managed to build up dirty section, soldered Naze32 but run into first problems after plugging ESC';s into Naze32 for calibration. One of ESC';s is shorting and Negative reference wire is burning - well another magic smoke for me. Will have to wait for a replacement.

Few pictures

After some researching I think I';ll go with DYS SN20A ESC';s they seem to have positive feedback and flashed with BlHeli. Anyone got an experience with them?

Looking good Raf.

I will be following to hear your opinion on the Naze32.

Cheers
Dave.

I have some of the DYS';s on order based on their reputation.

Looks to me like the burnt wire is the signal 0v. Seems like the ESC tried to pull all the 0v current through the signal 0v not the power 0v. I would check your 0v power line, maybe dry joint?
I try :-)

There is no other problem then ESC - checked everything. In the mine-time installed KISS 18A ESC';s - one is faulty (contacted them again) but gosh how beautiful and responsive they are. Anyhow DYS SN20A arrived today they basically the same size as KISS so we should be able to progress with this build.

Raf

DYS SN20A next to Kiss 18A - virtually the same size and weight.
Unfortunately DYS version of SN20A do not come with bootloader installed. but running BlHeli with damped light (braking) and oneShot. Perfect for Naze32

Raf

ESC';s installed - no magic smoke this time. SN20A are very similar to Kiss maybe not as responsive but I think I like OneShot feature.
Hope to finish build tomorrow - not much left to do.
And that';s how it look like for now

the signal wire looked fine to me, looked like the ground wire to me

It';s alive!
Feel great and PID';s are almost dialled in. Currently without OneShot enabled. Hoping to get some time later on today for some flying.
Weight is 990g with GoPro and 2200mAh 4S battery and seem nicely balanced - not bad for FR4 frame I think.

Only MinimOSD left to instal.

I showed this vid yesterday in the Shout Box

http://youtu.be/aluMsPUCSuw

Suggestion was either looptime or faulty Naze32. I investigated it and it';s apparent that it is ESC - again. It';s just a black series for me . Kiss burned at motor testing, Afro smoked on power connection, replacement Kiss is jerky (another replacement on the way) and SN20A stall motor at about 75% throttle - one of them. Also noticed that this one is not in the sync with other 3.
I';ll try to change timing on SN20A which I believe is medium by default to medium/hight as it maybe the issue. The only thing is that I';m not comfortable with stick command programming - they don';t have bootloader so I can not use USBlinker.

If you set demag compensation to low that can help with desyncs on BLHeli.

Otherwise play with looptime as that can also result in motor cut outs. There is some good info on this guy';s website if you haven';t already spotted it;

http://blog.oscarliang.net/naze32-on-mini-quad-fpv250/

Some people report motors cutting out at full throttle when looptime is set badly which is what it kinds of looks like in the video.

If you have an arduino you can flash that to program BLHeli over a 3 wire interface (the servo lead) easily enough using the BLHeli suite application. Have a look in the various options menus until you find it. I use one and it works fine.

Looptime was set to 2050 when this happened. I also tested it with 2500 looptime on the bench and the same thing happening. It';s front left which is exactly what you can see in the video.

I';m getting Arduino nano and also got flashing tool but don';t want to rip it apart again.

Since you can flash down the servo cable, unless you';ve directly soldered those to the FC then you should be able to reflash and also change settings without ripping anything out.

I';ve got this with a motor/esc combo at the moment on a test rig, will try and solve it myself too
Many Thanks

I ended up changing ESC - again but now all of then seem to work nice and smooth.
On SimonK I never had such a smooth and responsive running motors in other words I';m impressed with BlHeli so far.

I had some time to play with PC2 LuxFloat. So far I';m liking it. Still need some tuning but it';s not far off. Definitely need to work out RC Rate and Roll Pitch rates as they work differently to lets say PC0.

http://youtu.be/zAgHyKCGrrk
http://infinitefpv.com

Revs

I';m finding LuxFloat works best with OneShot. Great controller. I found that the ';D'; gain was a bit of a bugger to get right. A bit too much and the motors get a bit surgey in a hover, too low and you get a bit of bounce after a sharp input. Once it';s right though it';s really nice.

atomiclama

One of the good things about PIDC2 compare to 0 is that it is not linked to the rates, you don';t need to re visit your rates once you have changed your PID values. That caught me out with PIDC0

Oh yeah works great without oneshot.

CBQ330H had a full frame transplant today.
Frame is full 3M Matt Carbon Fibre
Main Plates - 1.5mm - dirty/clean section
Camera cage - 2.0mm
Arms - 4.0mm
Few extra standoffs ware added to make dirty section even stiffer although I';m not sure if it';s necessary.
AUW:
- 2200mAh - 973g
- 3300mAh - 1096g
Even though there is thicker camera cage plates, thicker and solid arms plus some extra hardware is actually 20g lighter

I';m happy with transplant to CF frame. It';s much stiffer and solved few issues. Had a little evening flying.
Need to lower a bit RC Rates as it';s to sensitive and a little bit P';s as it has a bit of oscillations at full throttle.
I';m happy it';s quite fast and yet it can produce nice smooth video.

Wish I had my Naza on one of them there frames, only thing that held me back from putting my name down to test was the lack of motors, that should fly nice,
