Gopro Hero 3 , Hero 2 White Balance and other tests

Just wanted  to check what  WB would be  like from both cameras while filming snow.
But  making this  video I discovered one problem. For  some reason the Hero 3s  video quality  degrade  much more than Her 2s ( after rendering ) no matter what output format I choose. (Im using SonY Vegas Pro  12)  And  only after  some  hours I found  that  the  best output format  for Hero 3  was XDCAM EX  - the only format, that would not  screw my video up.
Then I tried to use  Adobe Premiere  and the output format  was DSLR 1080@25fps..
As  you can see the Hero 2 ( on the right) looks much sharper  than  Hero 3, which should be  opposite .

If you find yourself in danger of being taken seriously, then try to do something which undermines or sabotages that perception in some way.

What version of 3 was this ?..

The White 3 is not as good a camera as the HD 2.. it has less pixels

White is 5mp
Silver is 11mp (HD 2 is 11mp)
Black is 12mp

Also lenses are different on all the 3';s...

This is Black  edition.
Filmed at 1080@25fps
The Hero 3BE   is actually better  that Hero 2.  Not much, but better ( im not talking about protune here)
And  its sharper! And  I like  Hero 3s white balance too,but in this  video you can see how different they are.
However as I said  editing video from Hero3  may take some more time until you find  the right output format which wasnt the case with Hero 2

here are my other video, where I  you will see hero 3 at  its best

It is better, but in some conditions the difference is  very small and  sometimes it look that Hero 2 is  almost better.

Yeh but that';s because he';s got ProTune on though so it will look like that.

Oh,  yeah  you';re right.
But anyway  I ve got all 3 cameras. The original, Hero 2  and Hero 3BE.
The difference between Hero 1 and Hero 2 was huge but between Hero 2 and Hero 3BE  isnt  that big.
Yes Hero 3 will give  you much better results  under the water, just because it now has a flat  glass. The WB also helps here.
It will also  be better in lower light conditions, but it depends. If  its too  dark,  you will see a lot of noise  while if  you shoot with Hero 2  itwould be  just black.
For me is better  black, than  noisy background. If  its bright and  nice  day the  results  are beautifull. The  Hero 3 is sharper too.
The hero 3 was meant to improve  the sky  in videos.  Hero 1 and  hero 2 tends to burn out  the sky  in higher contrast videos, but also give lighter shadows.
Hero 3 in this  case gives  you better results and  we see more details  in the  sky, but as the  result you will get darker  shadows. Its also  depends where you aiming.
Not always Hero 3 will look brighter, than Hero 2, but I still  like the  hero 3  more.
Its better camera in general, but  it does not mean you will get  way better results   always.
For example in this  video. This  is worse conditions to shoot  with any gopro, but  with Hero 3  it looks even darker.
http://youtu.be/KIWT0yDPSSI
In the same  situation Hero 2  would give  you burned  out sky and a bit lighter ground which would be better.
I did similar tests myself.
And in this  video  you will see  what gopro will look like  in conditions similar  to what  we got here in UK
and as you can see the Hero 3 looks darker, but has more details in the sky

P.S. Im still happy with my Hero 3  and have  no regrets of  buying it  :beer2:

Im  learning Adobe Premiere, so I did a quick  correction to some  Hero 3 footage .
So  the dark  window is  what the Hero 3 thinks  the snow should look like.
Brighter window is  my idea  of how the  snow should look like :)
