Has anyone tried making their own retractable landing gear from rc plane parts?

Yep. Got some fitted to my 550 hex. See if I can find some pics. There';s a few threads on here somewhere including mine where people have done it.

Bit tidier now with no jubilee clips. Somebody on here has done a slightly different and in my opinion,  better job than me but you get the idea. Works well and at around 40quid all in,  much cheaper than buying ready made ones at 400quid!
