Now that I have my little DJI frame with a CRIOUS AIO PRO complete, Thought it was time to move onto the TBS Discovery frame. I';ve been wanting to start this FPVing that everyone is talking about, so here I have two quads, the little 450 I';m going to practice with first, And the TBS is going to be my main one for this FPVing.
I enjoy building from scratch, so I thought I';d go a bit further with this one. My Setup is as follows,

4 AXI 2217/20 Gold Line
4 RCTimer ESC 30A
4 10x4.5 RCTimer Carbon props
1 TBS Discovery frame
4 Carbon booms
1 TBS Core
1 DJI NAZA WITH GPS
1 CYCLOPS OSD V1.5
1 Immersion 5.8G TX
1 4000 mah 4S Battery

AIRCONROB

Having trouble uploading pictures lol  :banghead:. so i';ll try again tomorrow.

Jumpy07

Rob,

You can ad pictures using the attachments option at the bottom.

What KV Motors are they ?

You don';t really need the core with the Cyclops OSD btw

Don';t know what I';m doing wrong, but I';m going to try and upload one picture instead three at a time.
Soz Craig only just seen your post, OK the motors are 840 KV in which Paul from electricwingman.co.uk said to run them on 11 " props, but for now I';m just going to stick the 10x4.5 carbon as I have few sets. And as goes for the CORE, I';m just using that to power the Video TX and FPV CAM, As I';m running it on 4S The CYCLOPS would push out 15 to 16 v which is too much for the OSD.

Cheers

Rob

Ok, started with the carbon booms, motor mounts and brackets.

Didn';t know you could get carbon booms for TBS ... nice.. how do they attach to the frame ?

I just run a 12v VR/ UBEC to power Cyclops from 4S..

11" props will get in the way of the GoPro lens btw

Sorry Craig, Had to dash off and take my kid to cadets camp he';s going on for the weekend. One down and one to go, maybe I';ll get the TBS finished this weekend.

Answer to your question before is, no you can';t get carbon booms for the TBS, It';s just my preference in trying something different. The booms are from spare parts of the well known Droidworx AD4. Just shortened to 238mm by 17mm diameter. Yes I know those parts are very expensive, but hey if it makes it look good, then I';m happy. And "Fly good" I hope lol

As for the CYCLOPS, well I';ve put the core on so I might aswell make use of it.

And the last but not least, as I have extended the arms a little, with standard arm Motor to Motor "Centre" is approx 420mm.

Now with the carbon arms which I intended to make longer which now gives me approx 470mm from Motor centre to Motor,  that in all will give me up to 12" prop without getting in the way of the Go-Pro. ~~

I wasn';t very impressed with the core stand off pins, so for my piece of mind I changed them for some longer ones.

Jumpy07

Looking forward to seeing this with the arms fitted..   should look superb

Craig, I do have a picture but at the mo It';s only in my head ~~. Here is a pic of one of the boom clamps, I must admit I';m only working with this out of all the spare nuts and bolts, It';s a shame I can';t use the TBS frame screws to put it all together, It would look much better than the ones I';m having to use.

[attach=2]

AIRCONROB

The other little problem I';ve found is the plate for the FPV camera, when you slot it between  the frame, It rattles around which I think will not help the image to be seen.

[attach=1]

All I';ve done to make it snug fit was a thin strip of double sided sponge tape on the tongs.

AIRCONROB

I think the most difficult part was how I was going to mount the ESC';s. Didn';t want to mount them on the booms, as It would spoil the look of them.

[attach=1][attach=2]

This was the end result.

AIRCONROB

Now for the intresting part, motor and boom assembly.

[attach=1][attach=2]

Just for a bit for orientation I added some dayglo tape at ends for when not FPVing.

AIRCONROB

Just a couple of LED';s on the boom ends.

[attach=1][attach=2]

AIRCONROB

These are the boom clamps that i am using, the only thing that I had to add was, the inner clamp with the single bolt going through it, I had to put a piece of fuel tube in the boom end so that if any vibration hopefully none,  the bolt will not rub through the ESC wires.

I did start off with putting the CRIOUS board on, but decided against it, as I think the Naza with GPS was going to be a better option for when I get into this FPVing, which I';m starting to feel a bit :sick:.

[attach=1]    :-/  [attach=2]

I think I made the wright decision :crossfingers:

Looking good rob. My only complaint is as a result of your diary I want one and I';ve spent tooooo much lately so cant :-(
Tunrnigy Talon Tri, TBS Discovery, TBS Discovery PRO, Spnky 250 Mini, EZUHF, EZOSD

AIRCONROB

Ok, now that I';ve got the frame, motors, ESC and flight controller in place  :smiley: next step is to wire in the OSD, Video TX, RX and the NAZA GPS.

[attach=1] I nearly forgot, the OSD GPS.

My question is, where is the best place to mount everything, I know you can';t have Video TX and GPS too close, but what';s the minimum distance you need to do these parts? Any ideas will be appreciated.

Cheers

Rob

All looking good Rob, when will it be ready to test fly?

As soon as I get my head round on where to put Video TX and GPS :hmm:

AIRCONROB

OK, so I finally got all the wiring into the frame, and slapped the booms on. I guess with standard arms if I were to snap one, It would just be a case of unbolting one arm and change it over, 10 min job maybe?. With the carbon booms I';m probably looking at about 15 to 20 min as everything is very tight in such little space.

[attach=1] [attach=2]

AIRCONROB

Some more pics of booms clamped down.

[attach=1] [attach=2] [attach=3]

Next is the VTX, RX, mount the GPS and OSD which I think I';ll try to hide between the frame.

mrplay

Looking very good, Mr Bling

Are you going to get it tested in the week, so we can go flying FPV at the weekend?

mickyt

Thats looking pretty cool and your going to be the only one here with a unique tbs mine is just the normal tbs  ~~

Weather not looking good so far, I';m going to have to test it in the living room like the over ones, that will get the wife and kids out of my way. But yes, looking forward to the weekend and have a go at this FPVing. But I';m going to have my first go with the 450 lol.

AIRCONROB

Here';s couple of pics ready to go, this forum has been a great help to me and am so happy with all you guys and lady';s for sharing your builds etc on this forum.
