Lipo doesn't seem to be balancing

Hi guys,

You';ll have to forgive my ignorance. I';m charging a lipo for the first time. It';s the turnigy 9xr 2.2 3s.

I';m using eco six charger from hobby king on the balance program at 1.7A. So after about an hour it drops to 0.5A and one of the cells doesn';t seem to be going anywhere sitting at 4.04V while the other two have maxed out at 4.20V.

Using my capacity checker it shows

Cell 1 at 3.949V 68%
Cell 2 at 4.114V 91%
Cell 3 at 4.113V 91%

Am I doing something wrong? Or do I need discharge and then balance charge a few times?

Any advice would be great.

Thanks,

Richard

Have you charged anything else LiPo wise on the charger?

If the charger works fine it would look like the low cell is buggered and if it';s new I would be putting in a warranty claim.

I had one from HK that was stuffed and they credited me in about a week.

You might want to discharge/ charge it a couple of times first (assuming you haven';t already done so)

Nope first time charging a lipo, first time using the charger. The charger is new the lipo is second hand but still pretty new. So it may well be the battery. I';ll try discharging/charging a couple of times see if that fixes it. If not I';ll order a new battery. Thanks.

Indeed it may be worth cycling the pack a few times, but IMO that';s quite a way out.

Did you notice what the cells were at before you started charging?

I did look but I can';t remember the exact values cell 1 was quite a bit lower though so I thought I best give it a charge. On the discharging side of things I';ve read I shouldn';t go below 3.3V per cell but the charger wants to go down to 3V

There is no hard scientific be all and end all rule regarding cell voltage that is why there are so many conflicting opinions.

I have flown some packs down past 3.3v and they have suffered no real damage where as some others will puff and be ruined. Might be worth leaving on the discharge cycle and keep an eye on the voltages and stop at 3.3v or above rather than letting the charger just do it';s thing.

Does the charger have a ';storage'; option?
Steve

spill50

OK I';ll do that. Yes it does have a storage option.

Storage should bring the cells down to 3.5v or there abouts.

Ah ok, thanks Biffa

The storage voltage should be around 3.85v per cell. My B6AC takes my packs to that value.

spill50

Well that has worked. Did the storage option which levelled the cells out at ~3.85V then did a full balance charge and everything is now sitting at 4.2V, thanks guys.

Every charger manufacturer has chosen different storage values which can cause a bit of confusion

I stand corrected mine indeed goes down to 3.8v.

I have no idea where I got 3.5v from
