PID advice needed

Bit stuck at the moment. I';ve read plenty theory of PID so it';s time to get stuck in but I';m unsure of the best approach. I';ve read that you should zero I and D then tweak P? Is that a method anyone would recommend or should I just leave I/D alone and raise/lower P and then change I/D?
Also by what increment should I change values for the three  variables?
I have a 250 size quad with default crius 2.5 PID and there';s no visible signs of snapping back to level,it seems to continue the last stick input until you counter it with an opposite input so how would I go about tuning it to respond like my h107d? Which levels back as soon as you release input for pitch or roll.

No idea about your flight controller but general consensus is zero i and d and just keep upping P till you get oscillations, then back off a little. On my cc3d (cleanflight) I changed P by 0.5 at a time initially.

Re: hubsan that has auto level. Sounds like you have your FC in rate (sometimes called Acro) mode. This does not self level at all.

Your FC might be able to do self level by changing flight modes? Have a look in the pc software.
I try :-)

Cheers for clearing that up. My fc is multiwii crius  2.5, I';m pretty sure it';s in acro mode so that would explain a lot. I';ll have a read about setting up auto level, atm I haven';t enabled baro/mag or horizon on the fc so maybe that';s where I need to be looking. Thanks.
