Emax Babyhawk-R

daich

Just received my emax babyhawk-r and wanted to start a topic here for anyone who owns one or is looking to own one

Comes with only 2 sets of props and I've looked, these aren't stocked anywhere so I'll probaby give some trusty gemfan 2035BN quad blades a go as well.

She's a porky but potent!

I've fitted mine with an XM receiver (don't recommend this rx but my XM+ fried so this is temporary) and have hovered it in my tiny flat with a Turnigy 450mah 65c for about a minute.  The motors came down warm and the battery cool.

Now just waiting for time and weather to eclipse  :banghead:

between life and weather, I didn't have a chance to get out to fly this bad boy until now.
I got in a quick 4 packs this morning and they were spent mostly on tuning.

warning - very boring video
https://youtu.be/J-hOb5IoDB0

I put the pids I ended up with in the video description. After more reading up on PID tuning I think I need to raise the P and I to get it more locked in.  Probably increase the TPA to allow for more P

I know I'm tuning with 3s and 4s packs but I'm trying to get a baseline and then fine tune each in two profiles.

How did you get OSD/Betaflight control.
Did you swap out the VTX?

Kellarly

Oh, another Bhawk-R flyer!

I bought one second hand. The guy I bought it off had put the 2.5 inch arms on with the 2.45 inch props and he did a really good job 3d printing a vtx aerial holder on it too, along with a tpu isolator that keeps the escs off the frame. It flies really nicely and now I'm trying to hit gaps that I was too chicken to hit with my 4 or 5 inch as I'd spend too long repairing them!

um....Kellarly, you bought my babyhawk  ::)

small world. I had to thin out the herd. I loved how the BH flew but the first to go were the quads i didn't build from scratch.

the print is here - https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:2857720
and the arms i got are here - http://taco-rc.com/3dpower-x-babyhawk-r-2-5-replacement-arms-kit-s-version-w-3d-printed-parts-for-babyhawk-r/

AnalogKid - The OSD worked out of the box... funny why yours isn't working? Ah, one thing to check in betflight OSD tab is to change it from PAL or NTSC. try one or the other. If you have it set differently than the camera itself, the OSD won't show up.

Hehehe, I thought it might be you, but didn't want to assume.

It's sooooo much fun. Between that and my tiny whoop, I'm getting a bunch more stick time as I'm able to fly in lots more places for longer (cheaper lipos).

@AnalogKid - As Daich said. I tried switching mine over and it went all off.

Hi Daich
I have OSD on my BHR -
I had read there was no smart audio or Tramp with the BHR, which is what allows entry to the Betaflight OnScreen controls for PID tuning as well as changing VTX power etc

From Quadrify's review - http://quadifyrc.weebly.com/reviews/emax-babyhawk-r-136mm-3-inch-micro-quad-review
Emax Magnum 25mW / 200mW VTX. Basic VTX with two most common operating frequencies for a micro. No smart Audio is a minor disappointment but cannel change button is easy to access as display LED.

My BHR isnt flying at the moment (I've given up on the canopy and frame - waiting for a new frame) - But I'll power it up and test whether I can access Betaflight OSD Setup
(Its normally up and left on the left TX stick, and then straight up on the right stick)

daich

smart audio/tramp is only needed to change VTX settings (frequency/power) via the OSD

You can change the PIDs with your tx as long as OSD is working

I think it is just left on the left stick...correct me if I am wrong.

That's incredible - never knew that. Thank you very much

I had it in 'my head' that change functionality was all tied to the VTX somehow.

Just gone back and properly read the Betaflight OSD info at
https://www.propwashed.com/betaflight-osd-setup-guide/

Yep - Its always been there.

I had someone else tune my XJB 145 in the field.
And I've dumped new PIDS in (mainly from well known youtubers like Nick Burns and others) in, via the Desktop/Configurator/CLI.
Just last week, I started to move some of the D Terms out in the field (newbie style - ie no real idea what I'm doing)

This now means I can do the same on the Babyhawk - R
(Waiting from a low cost 4mm ALFA frame from bangood to arrive - fed up with break parts on my BHR (TACO RC arms kept breaking)-

daich

i should really remove that video as the PIDs i ended with are completely different...i think i found someones and used it as a baseline.

if you go 2.5" maybe Kellarly can post the pids from his one as that one flew so locked in it was amazing.

My Babyhawk Race 3" was not seeing much use, mainly as I do not like flying LOS or for that matter FPV without having some bright LEDs for LOS orientation and FPV for recovery location.

Have just got around to modding it by adding the four addressable LED unit sold as a spare for the Eachine Aurora 90 fitted with a mount from Thingiverse.

MUCH better, now have visual arming indication as well.
