TeslaHex - mini Hexacopter

I';ve used Inkscape to design myself a mini hexacopter frame. The hexacopter came of the laser cutter ok. It will be a while before i get it flying but it';s looking good so far;

[smg id=172]

The design is based on my mini quadcopter frame. I';ve added 2 more motors to make it a bit sportier when it';s carrying all my FPV equipment and the GoPro 3 silver - the quad could manage it but i expect the hexacopter will do it better.

I will have to start a new thread in the Hexacopter section soon i think!

I will hopefully be test flying this hex on tuesday when the one remaining ESC i need arrives;

Now it';s been PID tuned;

And it flies much better so i took it outside;

How cool is that!  ~~ ~~ ~~

Very nice Chris - and flips on the 1st outdoor flight too  ::)

Thanks for sharing...

Nice one Chris, flies beautifully! Well done. Can';t wait to see you flying it with your cardboard box! lol. xx

Very nice!!!
When are you going to kit it???
:cool2:

I';ll be kitting the quadcopter design first. If that works out well the hex will follow afterwards.

The quadcopter design is much closer to finalised - definitely hoping to get the first small batch on sale in the next couple of weeks.

Out of interest did you notice much difference in orientation issues?  Did you find hexa any more difficult to tell which way round it is in the air?

I did for the first couple of minutes. I was rotating the quad and expecting to see 4 arms, and getting 6 - so i thought I';d turned 90 degrees whilst spinning when in fact i had only turned 60 degrees.

After a couple of mins it ';clicked'; and was much easier - still possibly a little harder than with the quad though just because the shape is ';busier'; and so harder to work out in your minds eye when off in the distance.

I expect things will improve tomorrow when i fit the LEDs though.

5 mins of gentle flight = 735mAh put back into a fully charged 3 cell 1300mAh lipo. So it looks like i should get at least 8 minutes of flying out of it - although i could probably fit a larger battery as well. The 1300mAh came off the mini quadcopter so it should be good for 1950mAh at least (50% extra).

Looking really cool! It';s really coming together well.. and as always, great flying Chris!  :beer2:

Any ideas what your kit prices might be? I';m sure my wife won';t notice a hexa in the collection...oh wait, that';s the other reality I don';t live in.  :hmm:

Ash

Awesome work, looking forward to seeing it up for sale in kit form, put my names on one!!

Thanks for your interest.

I will definitely have the mini quadcopter available in kit form first, hopefully the first few in the next few weeks. If that works out well for me i will try and get a hexacopter version released next.

Until i get all the bits together and sit down and do the sums i have no idea how much it will really cost. I would like to sell the quadcopter as a frame kit with all the parts needed to build the frame for between £20 and £35, depending on my costs. You will always be able to get a cheaper frame from china but i';m hoping some people will think it worth spending slightly more for one of mine if i get the design right.
And once you';ve built a few multirotors most people quickly realise that with the amount of effort you end up putting in to getting them flying right, it';s not worth saving too much money and buying a sub standard frame.

However much the quadcopter ends up costing, i would expect the hexacopter to cost about 50% more. It will contain 50% more parts.

Whilst it wont be the cheapest kit on the planet, the motors i';ve used aren';t that pricey (£7 each), you can use cheap ESCs from hobbyking (£5 each)  as long as you get the right ones and it doesn';t need an expensive battery (£5 each again). A simple KK2 or multiwii board will be perfect as a flight controller.

So it wont break the bank.

The hexacopter definitely needs more testing. I';ve only had it flying a day! But it seems ok so far. The real test will be when i FPV it of course...

Now with first person perspective wirelessly transmitting video equipment. Only added another 120 grams of weight so hopefully it wont slow it down too much.

It was a bit windy but i managed to get the first FPV test flight done and recorded on the GoPro;

I';m fairly pleased with how it went.

Looks very dialled in, Chris.  Nice one.  LoL at that fpv helmet..is is something else ;D  and also at the bit where you get close to the back of your head @2:34 LoL

Riggsbie

That looks awesome....

Any dimensions or details on the Hex ? Looks brilliant, I want one !

macspite

Really impressive hex, flies really well. As well as making some kits based on it are you going to sell kits for your helmet design ...  :whistling:

Upgraded my FPV antennas - thanks Gav.

First test with me new aerials. Seems very good so far - no range issues at all yet. I need to do more testing but they already seem a bit better than the hobbykings i was using before.

It';s still early days - i suspect the design will be changed and improved a fair bit before i get the prototype cut from plywood then i may need to make modifications before i try it in fibreglass. But here is my first attempt at a ';spider'; mini hexacopter layout
