Which Spektrum Receivers Have Programmable Failsafe?

This is for all you Spektrum TX + RX and Orange RX users. It relates to the two FailSafe methods implemented in this radio gear.   They are very different in function, not universally available across all RX and not even well documented in the manuals.

SmartSafe Failsafe
This is the default failsafe. It basically remembers the Throttle position (only) on binding to the TX.  From then on, unless re-bound, if there is RF signal loss (ouit of range or TX failure) the RX will set the throttle to the position set at binding and hold the other channels at whatever position they were when the failsafe triggered..

The problem with this is that you will either see your model fly away into the distance at whatever heading it was on, assuming sufficient throttle was set at binding. Or the throttle will be cut and the multi-rotor will fall out of the sky like a rock. That is all.

Preset Failsafe
This is an alternate failsafe method that remembers all of your channel stick and switch positions at the time of binding.  So it is very useful for invoking a smart FCs RTL/RTH (return to launch/return to home) function.  It could, of course, invoke any desired function of the flight controller.

And for the less capable FCs it could be used to set stick and throttle positions such as to bring the multi-rotor down to ground in a fairly controlled manner. Perhaps set it to circle at a throttle position that will cause it to lower to the ground gently. Or less hard than gravity alone.

Setting the two different failsafe modes:

There are two Binding procedures. One is for Hold and the other is for Preset.

For SmartSafe failsafe, Insert the Bind Plug, Turn on the Rx, Wait for the Blinking Lights, Depress and Hold the Bind Button on the Tx and Turn on the Tx, then Release the Bind Button and Remove the Bind Plug after the lights go Solid. If you turn off the Tx while the Rx is still on, all Control Surfaces should Hold their positions and the Throttle should go to Idle

For Preset failsafe, Insert the Bind Plug, Turn on the Rx, Wait for the Blinking Lights, Remove the Bind Plug, Set the Sticks, Switches, and Knobs on the Tx to the position you want the Control Surfaces to move to in case of a Failsafe Event, Depress and Hold the Bind Button on the Tx and Turn on the Tx, then Release the Bind Button and wait for the lights to go Solid. If you switch off the Tx while the Rx is still on, the Control Surfaces should move to the Preset positions.

Which RX support Preset failsafe?

SPEKTRUM Rx ||Has "preset failsafe" ||Described in manual

AR7110YesYes

AR9020YesYes

Generally, if the RX has a port marked "Batt/Data" then it has preset failsafe. If the port is just marked "Batt" it doesn';t.

the orange stuff, DSMX has preset, DSM2 has not. i have 2 of the (now discontinued) 8 channel DSMX, they seem very good with vector and naza.
440 Y6 with vector, F330 quad with naza, hammer 240 with flip32, and watch this space.

Gatallica

The Orange R620 (not X) is DSM2 only and has preset failsafe.

Just got one of the new R720X';s with and am very happy with it.
4 Years MR Experience - DJI (Preferred), APM 2.5/6, KK2, Spektrum systems. Always happy to help....!
