Absolute Noob Build
« on: September 11, 2017, 16:43:15 »
Hello there,

I am completely and utterly 100% new to drone racing. I think it may just be the most exciting thing I';ve ever seen haha!

I';m looking to build my own drone and it is mildly terrifying I have to say, I';d like to be able to do both acro and racing but I think I will be doing more acro than racing.

I';ve put together what I think is a decent part list but I';m not exactly sure, I';ve found a few different peoples builds but everyone offers different suggestions so I got pretty confused! The parts I looked at are as follows;

Frame:
Lumenier QAV210 Charpu

Flight Controller:
Afroflight Naze32 Rev6

ESC:
Littlebee Summer 30a

Motors:
T-Motor F40 pro 2400KV

Camera:
HS1177

VTX:
TBS Unify Pro 5G8

Radio:
Turnigy Evolution

This is about as far as I have got and I';m pretty overwhelmed by all the different options, I know I need a transmitter for the radio but I don';t know what I would need. Any advice would be amazing and feel free to take me under your wing (almost a good pun) and mould me into the ultimate drone pilot!

Thanks for any of your help in advance

Lot';s of love,
Whatanoob

Hi, so don';t fret, we were all where you are once, and we survived.

You have the makings of a spectacularly good quad there but one of two gotchas you need to address. We fix those it should meet your needs completely.

Gotchas:
Flight controler :
The naze is old and can';t really handle modern software. You need at least an f3 or f4
There are plenty to choose from but in your case, to keep life simple and easy I would suggest lumenier lux v2:
http://www.hobbyrc.co.uk/lumenier-lux-v2-flight-controller

The cam is fine-ish you are gonna want to know what your battery voltage is so you can land before it turns into a ball of 🔥, therefore get a camera which has a voltage sensor/osd.  The two main candidates are runcam swift v2 or Foxeer arrow v3

RECIEVER for the turnigy evo, I am Frsky on all three radios I own. Doubtless someone will chime in but you really want one that runs serial protocols (sbus, ibus etc) so suggest tgy-ia6c is the way to go.

You are gonna need props (suggest start with something like hq5x4x3v1s)
And lipos, (1300-1500mah)
Also a vtx antenna (suggest menacerc raptor)
And also recomend a set of these to keep your reciever antenna out your props:

Just a quick reply. :welcome:
For a receiver I would go with a Flysky x6b. It does serial and battery voltage telemetry back to TX and it is small and light.

Thanks so much for you reply, feels like I';m being addressed by Drone Yoda haha!

Deffo gonna look into those things now, I may switch to Frsky if I can bring myself to spend more on the radio. I';ll no doubt be back when begging for help when my drone catches fire the second I open the delivery haha.

Thanks for the welcome! So will that work with the Turnigy Evolution? Or would you recommend another Transmitter?

Personnaly I would suggest Frsky q x7 and an xsr reciever.
But turnigy evo has its supporters.

Frsky has a broader knowledge base (pretty much everyone I fly with use Frsky)

(I should add:
Frsky will do everything you need, has much wider knowledge and support and parts/recievers are widely available in the uk

Turnigy evo got pretty good reviews although works best for thumbers not pinchers (pinching is a little more accurate), recievers and parts less available, I know pilots who got one but have gone back to Frsky

Flysky fsi6 (may have got the letters wrong but suspect ched or someone will tell you the right ones) is an economy radio that is broadly used

In that case if your budget permits get the qx7. As much as I like my i6 it does have its limits like only 1 timer. I do like that it uses AA Batts as well.

I use rechargeable 2150mAh ';ready to go'; AA';s from 7dayshop. They are their own brand of eneloops, i.e. don';t self discharge so ready to be used when you go flying. For the money they are very good, had current sets about 3 years and still going well.

I guess I get over 10hrs tx on time with a set but I do carry a spare set with me.
