Thinking about Taranis
« on: February 17, 2017, 08:37:28 »
As title, I'm thinking of switching over from Spektrum to Taranis this year partly for the better choice, products and price. The choice of Rx's though is bewildering, not too bad for quads but I've a few nitro planes and looking at the range list of Rx's ( Xr, Sr, Xm, V8, D8, Long range ) leaves me confused. Do any of these supply basic telemetry for power flight packs 4 to 6volt without buying extra modules as I'm a great believer in keeping things as simple as possible.

What sort of rc aircraft mate?
For racing quads go with xsr if you want telemetry and xm+ if you are not too fussed (although you can still get RSSI)

I finally got a Taranis a few weeks back, it's great. RX wise you wanna be look at the 'X' ones. So X4R/X8R if you need servo pins (planes), XSR for SBUS (quads) and XM/XM+ (SBUS) for micro quads. All have RSSI and all except the XM/XM+ have telemetry. Make sure you get RX's with the LBT firmware. Only D16 protocol will work so avoid the older D8 stuff.

Don't forget, you can bind mulitple RX's to one model on your TX. Just set the model number to '0' in the TX (you'll see once you have it and can start tinkering with it ;)). Great for quads.

I got, hanger 9 Piper cub saito 80, multiplex Funcub, Piper Pawnee, seagull 540 with a 150 laser, Astro Hog os 61fs, seagull Rv8 115 saito.
I have stopped buying ARTF planes now, fed up with with making them airworthy as they never have enough glue on them.
I have a few kits to start somtime. Mystic, sig 80" clipped wing cub. One of my favourites is a sig wonder with a enya 15 in it, goes like stink my heart jumps out of my chest at full chat. Only cost me a £10 at a boot sale.

I was looking at the taranis, but I held off, I dont know if its just me but isnt this style Tx a little long in the tooth? they havent changed form factor much since probably the late 70's it just looks old fashioned, Its big, bulky and heavy. I saw the Turnigy evolution and thought it looked on the right track to something more modern and  ergonomic, but its not quite right yet, I'll keep hold of my DX6i untill something like the Evolution comes out in frsky or atleast with a module slot.

I know what you mean about the size, but if you fly planes as well it's no different. I can see problems with the rotary switches in the future on the Horus and that cheaper taranis. At least the normal old fashioned type has just got push buttons. One thing I will say that's good with Spektrum is the rotary barrel menu switch "spot on"

One major problem I saw with the turnigy evolution is it has no trim switches.
Why use 4 motors when you can use 6?

Turnigy evo is really designed for quad market
I would go taranis if you are flying planes unless you are desperate for a big tray format, in which case you are probably looking a Jeti and wandering how much you could get for the wife and kids

This is another reason i held off getting one, if the Evo was frsky and had trims i probably would have picked one up.

I had a nice chat with t9 hobby, as well as Xr, Xm there is the Sr recivers as well. That's if you want gyros ! The lowest voltage they work on is 2.7v which is lower than my spektrum stuff. The servos would be the first to pack up. I did ask about getting a dsmx module so I wouldn't have to replace all the spektrum stuff at once but they reckoned I'd be asking for trouble.

I know people who run the orange module in a taranis because their micro brushed quads come with built in speky and it is fine

I prefer frsky Rx in quads, smaller and lighter with diversity antenna, currently using xm+ in 5 inch quads

Xm+ are still in stock at Electricwingman although he has sold a lot today can't find anywhere else with them in stock in uk

The colour on the taranis is adjustable (or at least it is on the x9d

Doing my research I've found that there is a white to amber red and a white to blue. Trust me to fancy the red and it looks like there is only the blue knocking about.

Yeah mine's blue. Though you can alter the colour between blue and white, also the usual brightness, contrast, etc.

I had a look there but they don't have an alloy case with the tx, I'm trying to get it from the same place to keep postage costs down  ~~ Being born and dragged up in Yorkshire and living down south I have to keep up with the traditions of living tightly.

Born and dragged up in Yorkshire myself, I sympathise, however I would still go for that xm+, just been through all uk suppliers I know and no one has. Delivery from china may not be quick so may be in for a short drought

As I'm nearly finnished a 140 quad with spec/sat I will get one and practise setting up on a foam Funcub plane. It can take a bit of punishment and I'm not too worried about it. Then phase the other stuff out.

I bought 4 XM+ receivers from electricwingman, they arrived quite quickly too, all my aircraft are now on Frsky.

Probably my fault they're all sold out.

with regards to your original question and nitro planes, I think the frsky stuff would be very suitable. I run D4R-II in a lot of planes and it is 2S lipo capable and has rx voltage telemetry as standard, no set up needed. D4R-II is 4 channels pwm so ideal for basic planes.

it just makes sense
