Tokio X
« on: March 09, 2017, 21:33:24 »
Ok this is a new quad from FPV-Flightclub.
Background:
Mike has been thinking of designing his own frame for a long while, he first mentioned it to me over a year ago, for those that are not familiar with the US Store Mike has done some fantasticly helpful videos and guides, and as a reference he is where I bought my fatshark doms from.
His builds are super clean, which he usually puts down to OCD (not sure how serious he is) so been looking forward to seeing what he produced.

He had kindly sent me a pre production frame to break, and having seen some of the ones he threw away and some of the features he has put into this I have to say my mouth is watering. The detail and thought on this thing are way beyond anything I currently own (and within the last month I have built a chameleon and 2 dquad obsessions)

Check out the post for the frame here:
http://fpv-flightclub.com/flightclub-tokio-x/
And tell me you don't want one!

I believe he is intending a number of variants which I am sure will appear in good time, for the moment the frame goes on advanced order tomorrow, and mine is currently heading over the Atlantic.

Build list:
Frame:
Tokio X
http://fpv-flightclub.com/tokio/

Flight controller:
Lumenier lux v2 (bf 3.16, 8khz/4khz/dshot600 reversed prop direction)
http://www.hobbyrc.co.uk/lumenier-lux-v2-flight-controller

Esc:
Sunrise cicada 35a 4-in-1
http://fpv-flightclub.com/product/cicada-4-in-1-35a-esc/

Motors:
T-motor f40 pro 2400kv (the wires are too short to work with a 4 in 1 so I will be splicing them to other wires)
https://www.electricwingman.com/f40-pro-2400

Cam:
Runcam swift v2
https://www.electricwingman.com/runcam-swift-2-black

Vtx:
Tbs unify pro hv race
https://www.electricwingman.com/tbs-unify-pro-hv-race-sma

Antenna:
Tbs triumph (normally I tend to use the menacerc raptor nowerdays, but my one worry about this frame is the aspect of the antenna, it seems like if the quad is flying towards you the signal is at its weakest and trying to get through the body of the quad, the raptor has a wider, flatter signal than the triumph, the latter seems better suited to this frame)
https://www.electricwingman.com/tbs-triumph-fpv-antennae-sma

Rx:
Frsky xm+
https://www.electricwingman.com/frsky-xm-plus-receiver

Sundry:
12v pololu to power vtx and cam
Xt60 plug
Racekraft 5051 smoke
Tattu r-line 4s 1300mah
Heat shrink, mesh sleveing, zip ties etc

And just because, oh child of the internet you, clicking on the link at the beginning was too much effort, the frame has:
Chamfered (nub that means rounded mate) edges to the baseplate
Built in soft mount for the flight controller
All bolt heads on the bottom of the frame are recessed - no more bolt holes in lipos
The best carbon mike could find and rotated to the correct angle to maximise strength
And comes with magic beans honest!
Build to come

Whilst I agree completely mate, in this case the xt60 wires connect straight to the 4in1 esc, the fc runs off battery voltage so no pdb on the quad, less weight

same as the new cc3dv2, it'll run direct upto a 6s and the built in 12v & 5v becs outputs deal with any vtx,rx,osd and lighting requirements ~~

Yep,got one of the similar fc here that uses the esc for power, think prob is you got to use a 4in1 esc or daisy chain esc and power straight to esc.using a furious fpv radiant got from makeitbuildit as he was out of kombini.not exactly ideal for a rotorx atom but i will build it taller for sake if it.

You certainly on a roll build wise!

Some observations:
This is a prototype and uses a quasi isotopic carbon bottom plate. In the final release he is using hypotense cut. I have to say, this carbon is very nice, the chamfered edges are a really nice touch, the weave is very tight, tighter than lumenier as far as I can see. It is very rigid which will prevent oscillations.

Buttermiunt is neat and easy to fit,

Canopy is robust but with some flex to it, should help in a crash. Overall very neat and tidy, living up to expectations :)

Soldering may be tonight or tomorrow night

That any better?

A little tuning and flying very nicely, no oscillations, no prop wash although finding the racekraft 5051 slippy in corners (to used the hq5040v1s tri and quad blades, will drop some hq goodness on tonight and retune tomorrow

Ok because the racekraft felt slippy in the corners is spent today retuning with hq5040v1s tris.

It has taken me much longer to tune this quad than most others, I put this down to a number of things:
1. Very strong blustery winds
2. Very powerful motors and very light props that could change speed and thrust damn quickly

Revs - my opinion of the t-motors - damn good, probably up there with the lumenier mx2206 2450kv, a bit hard to tell on smoothness due to wind and tuning, but persevered because they felt so good

Now at a point where it could probably use a couple more points off here and there but hard to tell with the wind, the wind isn't changing the aspect at all, it holds that really well

Tomorrow's plan either shave off the last few points or try heavier props (s tip 5040 tris or quad blade v1s)

Not that anyone has one of these with this setup but happy to share pids if you do

Not sure about the T-motors but my Oomph's seemed to get on really well with DAL T5045 V2 props. They had no issue with the weight, felt nice in the corners and bags of punch/speed. Easy to tune too. Big power draw though.

Yeah I used to use the dal t5045 a lot, agree
As discussed finding the t-motor f40 pros right up there with the lumenier mx2206 2450s mate, these hints ooze torque, the hq5x4x3v1s are just ultra grippy, I did a last tune with them first thing this morning and very happy with setup, I may put hq s tips on at some point, that is very like the t5045, very forgiving of tune as it is heavier with a broader blade, more load, but for now off to burn some packs :D

Ok here is an interesting one, as some may be aware I tried azure power props (also called boomerang and banana props) and wasn't overly impressed before, however it was suggested that they work for higher kv/torque motors, so I mounted them on the Tokio, I have to say very nice, flies well, fast but with an even power band, do end up making sacrifices to the Chinese god Li Po but worth it, see are staying on

took it up to the field, only to discover there is some sort of kiting event on, must be over 1000 people there an kites all over the place, there was even a commentator on a loudspeaker, not sure what he was commenting on, but hey, not possible to fly there, so took it to local footy field I use for testing, couple of raw vids below
points: not convinced my spotter was working correctly in the first one!
quad is tuned spot on without the session, so probably a bit off with it

And following Erin stocks vid I wanged iMovie on my iPad, pulled down some old bits of footage off the GoPro and played, I really must video some serious flying:
