Got bored waiting for my bits and pieces to arrive from various suppliers  :whistling:, and couldn';t
find a source for FR4 or G10 material big enough at a silly enough price to buy it  :banghead:.
So - I decided to make my own  :evil.

No pics of the Fibreglass manufacture sorry, but here is a brief guide. If I do another i';ll take pics and add in here

Fibreglass manufacture

Not saying this is the correct way to make fibreglass, but it certainly worked fine for me  ::)

Measured and decided I needed a piece roughly 370 x 270 to cover both the top and bottom plates

I used a suitably sized piece of ply wood as a base, and sealed with some primer.
spray a couple of coats of wax release agent and allow to dry in between each coat.

You need to work out surface area for coverage to determine how much resin, and 2% catalyst is required.
I wanted mine to be black so I added some polyester dye to the mixes.

Using 60g of gel coat and 1ml of catalyst, mix thoroughly and brush on to base board
Allow to become tacky, can take 2-4 hours

Cut a piece of CSM "Chopped Straw Mat" 400 x 300 and lay on top of gel coat
mix 200g resin with 4ml catalyst and spread over CSM, I used a tongue spatula
flatten with a ribbed roller to ensure no bubbles present, should splatter if you have enough resin
allow to become tacky, I think this was around an hour or less

Cut a piece of woven glass mat 300 x 300 and lay on top of resin
mix 200g resin with 4ml catalyst and spread over woven, I used a tongue spatula again and a brush
Allow to become tacky

Using 60g of gel coat and 1ml of catalyst, mix and brush on to resin surface
Allow to harden.

I removed it using a wallpaper scraper

Came out well on the base surface, not so good on the upper surface, but hey this is my first attempt  :shrug:

Machining the frames on the CNC

So now on to manufacture of the top and bottom frame plates, I took some pics and a vid this time  ~~
(need to edit the vid - 700mb exceeds the upload limit  :rofl:)

My nice new piece of fibreglass secured to the bed of my CNC, a lot of screws as I don';t want it to
vibrate while machining and delaminate.

Drill all the 3mm dia holes
spotface them as the material thickness varies, this ensures they are all at the same thickness.
machine the top plate cutouts
machine the slots for velcro strips
Secure the plates with screws through the spacer holes ready to cut the outside profiles
finish the profiles.

Remove them from the machine and deburr.

spend a bit of time with a sanding block to improve the upper surface, cosmetic really
but I like things to look decent, and here they are

Approximately 2.5mm thick, top plate weighs 67g and bottom plate weighs 89g

Thanks for the good comments guys, it will be nice to reach the next step soon.

Looks like i';ll be at the local diy at some stage to pick up some 10mm square for the arms, HK UK still no sign of stock.

I';m waiting on the motors, esc, AIOP stuff and some wire from RCT anyway, at least I know they are getting closer daily, just hope there isn';t a big wasp in the box when they get here  :o

Having been a programmer for years I never even considered one for home use, until a mate sent me a link showing that they were being made in smaller versions.

As soon as I saw them I knew I wanted one, took a fair while to gather the information and materials, and with some great help from other people I was able to make mine.

It was around 6 months of evening trawling followed by about 3 months of sourcing parts and building with lots of help, even the power supply is DIY running dc at the optimum for the stepper motors, and i';ve left room for a 4th axis if I ever take the notion.

Thanks for the mod/unmod  :rofl:

Had to look it up lol, the additional axis would allow me to angle the cutter in the spindle or as I was considering, to use it as a rotary axis.

I could put a small chuck on the bed of the machine and rotate it while machining, a very simple example would be to engrave the circumference of a ring.

Thinking about your question, you don';t need a 4th axis to machine the cube in a cube, but it does involve a number of manual material rotations in a vice. I';ve seen a ball machined inside a cube, was impressed, never tempted to make one though  :laugh:

Must admit I was amazed after I had machined it and it appeared ok, then I held it up to the light - wow.

Got my prop balancer and some ancilliaries today .... another little step closer
